A Booming Black Market Is Putting Many Cacti Species in Danger…
September 24, 2018
Nearly a fifth of cactus species around the world are at risk of endangerment or extinction due to lax conservation measures, according to a study published in Conservation Biology.
Cacti may not be the sort of lifeform people associate with poachers, but there is a real black market for them. In Arizona, where the saguaro cactus is the official state plant, authorities are considering microchipping cacti that are most likely to be uprooted and illegally sold to buyers, sometimes for more than $1,000 per plant.

You might want to think twice before petting a pet store puppy…
September 24, 2018
Last week, the Centers for Disease and Prevention reported that an outbreak of multidrug-resistant Campylobacter jejuni has sickened more than 100 people across 18 states in the past two years. And most of these victims had recently come into contact with a pet store puppy.
C. jejuni is one of the most common culprits of food poisoning, causing an estimated 1.3 million cases in the U.S. annually. Most of these cases are isolated, rarely showing up as part of an outbreak. Outbreaks can happen, though, and dogs are known to be an occasional source of C. jejuni infections.
