The manipulation of public opinion over social media platforms has emerged as a critical threat to public life. Around the world, government agencies and political parties are exploiting social media platforms to spread junk news and disinformation, exercise censorship and control, and undermine trust in media, public institutions and science.
Overall, the use of organised social media manipulation campaigns is a big business. “We estimate that tens of millions of dollars are spent on this type of activity,” says Howard. “Some of the money may be spent on legitimate advertising on social media, but there is certainly a growing industry for fake accounts, online commentators, and political bots.”
Rep. Cedric Richmond (D-LA), the Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), said on Thursday that it is a “bad idea” for House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to consider instituting term limits on committee chairs. Pelosi said on Thursday that she was “sympathetic to the concerns that have been expressed” by some House Democrats regarding term limits.
“I think it’s a bad idea, I think it’s awful timing, and I think it’s a hell of a reward for all these chairmen who went out there traveling the country and busting their behinds to get Democrats elected,” Richmond told The Hill.
Trump had been expected to make the announcement at the Army-Navy game, but made the announcement on Twitter instead. Typically, the successor to the chairman would not be selected until next year, given that Dunford is due to serve until Oct. 1, 2019.
Sources told Fox News on Friday that Dunford has no plans to end his term as chairman early. The next chairman will serve for four years, instead of two years. But a change was made in 2016 because Congress wanted continuity before and after a presidential election.
I am pleased to announce my nomination of four-star General Mark Milley, Chief of Staff of the United States Army – as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, replacing General Joe Dunford, who will be retiring....
Very sad day & night in Paris. Maybe it’s time to end the ridiculous and extremely expensive Paris Agreement and return money back to the people in the form of lower taxes? The U.S. was way ahead of the curve on that and the only major country where emissions went down last year!
The Paris Agreement isn’t working out so well for Paris. Protests and riots all over France. People do not want to pay large sums of money, much to third world countries (that are questionably run), in order to maybe protect the environment. Chanting “We Want Trump!” Love France.
An international coalition of Women’s Rights activists will host a high profile Speakers’ Forum and News Conference at the National Press Club in Washington, DC, on December 11 to raise awareness about barbaric abuse of women and child brides under Sharia Law, and to express their unwavering support for President Donald Trump, who champions their cause.
“We are bringing women from all across the country and all over the world to raise our unified voices in support of President Donald Trump,” said coalition president Rabia Kazan. “President Obama created ISIS and encouraged Sharia Law throughout the Middle East, and for eight years he turned a deaf ear to our cries. Finally, there is hope for us because of President Trump. He is changing the game. He is the only one fighting for us, and for our human rights.”
An FBI sex sting has snared a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force, who is now accused of trying to meet a 14-year-old girl at a hotel after the two talked online.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports 47-year-old Air Force Lt. Col. Willie Newson was arrested Tuesday at a Marietta hotel on charges of child exploitation. Authorities say Newson was trying to meet up with a teen he met on a dating app. But the teen was really an undercover officer.
"Thirty of the people have prior felony convictions for serious or violent offenses, and 33 have criminal charges pending, immigration officials said. Nine had been previously deported, and 15 had been previously released by local authorities despite the agency's request to hold them," the AP noted

Scientists have identified a strain of Yersinia pestis bacterium from the unearthed bones of a Neolithic woman in a burial site in Sweden.
A team of international researchers believes that the bones were around 4,500 years old, making the strain the oldest that has been identified in history. The team also claims that the strain is the closest to the genetic origin of the plague that they have ever seen.
Raymond Uadiale, of Maple Valley, Washington, didn’t create or spread the malware, but he helped its distributor cash out and launder the payments made by victims after taking some of the profit for himself. For his part in the crime, Uadiale pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering and will spend 18 months in prison.
Computer users who inadvertently downloaded the ransomware would find their computers locked behind a splash screen claiming they had violated federal laws by visiting illicit websites or downloading illegal files. These screens would display the logo of the FBI or another law enforcement entity along with false threats of legal action.
“The FBI would never remotely lock someone’s computer. If you were truly under investigation, you would hear from us very directly. Our advice is, don’t pay the ransom.”
Christopher Rizzo, special agent, FBI Washington Field
At approximately 7:54 a.m., Wellton Station agents working a commonly utilized route to circumvent the Interstate 8 Immigration Checkpoint near Dome Valley observed a suspicious vehicle traveling east, near Avenue 20E and County 7th Street. Agents were following the vehicle, when the driver pulled over on his own. Agents then made contact with the driver, who is identified as a Lawful Permanent Resident Alien from Mexico. During the encounter, a Border Patrol canine positively alerted to an odor it was trained to detect. Agents discovered 90 packages of methamphetamine hidden inside a speaker box behind the front seat. The narcotics have a combined weight of 65.34 pounds and a street value of more than $196,000.
