December 14, 2018
A new study has found that the species will likely thrive in most of the eastern US and in the Pacific Northwest.
Although there have been no reports of Asian longhorned tick-to-human transmission of disease in the United States so far, Dr. Rochlin said that it is critical to learn more about this tick and its capabilities.
He explained that in East Asia, the Asian longhorned tick transmits thrombocytopenia syndrome virus, which triggers a severe fever on par with Rift Valley Fever. Additionally, the thrombocytopenia syndrome virus is closely related to the Heartland virus, which is already present in the United States and transmitted by lone-star ticks.

Trump’s war on Huawei splits Europe and Five Eyes…
December 14, 2018
The American push, which continued Wednesday with public accusations by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, is exposing fault-lines between U.S. allies in Europe as well as the so-called "Five Eyes" intelligence community — which have largely followed the U.S. lead — and others that resist the American pressure by stopping short of calling out Chinese tech.
It's another Cold War — this time over information technology.
5 Eyes: 4 nations agree to restrict Huawei, and the one who doesn't (UK), is the one nation that's pointed to the most for spying on Trump. It's like they were using Huawei phones or something.
Vegan diets are adding to malnutrition in wealthy countries…
December 14, 2018
Hidden hunger affects over two billion people, globally. The cause is a chronic lack of essential micronutrients in the diet, such as vitamins and minerals... While many of the cases of hidden hunger are found in developing countries, this phenomenon is also a growing public health concern in developed countries...
The rapidly growing trend of veganism is likely to become another major contributor to hidden hunger in the developed world. According to the Vegan Society, the number of people switching to a vegan diet in the UK has risen more than fourfold in the last decade...
Bone health is a concern for long-term vegans. Vegans are consistently reported to have lower intakes of calcium and vitamin D, with resultant lower blood levels of vitamin D and lower bone mineral density reported worldwide. Fracture rates are also nearly a third higher among vegans compared with the general population.
Omega 3 and iodine levels are also lower compared with meat eaters, as are vitamin B12 levels. Vitamin B12 is most often obtained from animal foods, and higher rates of deficiency have been found in vegans compared with other vegetarians and meat eaters. The symptoms can be serious and include extreme tiredness and weakness, poor digestion and developmental delays in young children. Untreated, vitamin B12 deficiency can cause irreversible nerve damage.

December 14, 2018
The Department of Education said it will cancel $150 million of student loan debt, impacting about 15,000 people whose schools closed.
The Obama-era borrower defense relief program – which essentially ground to a halt under Education Secretary Betsy Devos – provided a path for people to seek forgiveness for federal student loans if a shuttered school violated specific laws or misled students.
DeVos was highly critical of the program, reportedly calling it a “free money” giveaway, and sought to change and delay the program. However, she was sued, and a federal judge ruled in September the program needed to “go into effect.”
