Smart People May Be More Likely to Fall for Fake News (or Not)…

Scientists are weirdly divided over what seems like common sense.
[...]
Pennycook agreed this is not just a cognitive issue but could encompass elements of personality and mental health. Just as Shermer showed there creative delusional people, there also are those smart but narcissistic types — the people who insist all climate scientists are idiots, for example.But... all climate scientists are idiots. What is a "Climate Scientist" anyway? Well, let's look at JunkScience as they explain it pretty well. For example:
A climate scientist is someone who makes predictions about the climate, tests them and then repeats the process until he has developed a reliable explanation for how some aspect of the climate operates. Modelers who work with global temperatures may be considered as climate scientists ⎯ provided they also have other scientific characteristics, such being unbiased, honest, transparent, etc. Study of past climate does not constitute science nor does the making of untestable predictions.
[...]
Despite all the aforesaid claims and counterclaims, what has been disregarded in all these exercises-in-counting is how many of the surveyed individuals are “climate scientists” doing “climate science”? Certainly many researchers have published many articles on many aspects of climate. But how much of it is actually scientific in nature? How much of it is mere stamp collecting? No one has really answered that question. But I digress...

REMINDER: Police Seize More Than 450 Guns Under Florida’s New ‘Red-Flag’ Law…
January 3, 2019
The Risk Protection Order, signed by Florida Gov. Rick Scott, essentially strips a person’s second amendment rights if a task force team and a judge believe it is warranted – meaning if the person shows any signs of being a threat to themselves or others.
According to WFTS-TV, Sgt. Jason Schmittendorf, of the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, said approximately 200 guns have been confiscated in Florida since the red-flag law was enacted. “Around 30,000 rounds of ammunition were also taken,” he stated.
No due process? Where's the NRA on this? Oldest "civil rights" organization? Where's the fight? The worst part of all this, Floridians voted in a commie for their Agricultural commissioner, the same person that handles concealed gun permits. You know where that's going. This news first appeared a few months ago, but with the new agricultural commissioner getting sworn in, it's reappearing again by a few media outlets trying to get the word out before things go more downhill.⠀

Georgia lawmakers prepare new crackdown on sex traffickers
January 3, 2019
Georgia politicians are preparing a raft of new legislation this year to target sex trafficking, including measures that make it easier for law enforcement to prosecute the crime and new ways for government agencies to offer trauma treatment for victims.
[...]
The legislation to be considered during the General Assembly session that begins Jan. 14 has yet to be introduced, but state Rep. Chuck Efstration, R-Dacula, said it will center on two themes. The first would give law enforcement officials more resources to investigate the crime. And the second would create a legal framework between law enforcement, the judicial system, state agencies and advocacy groups to coordinate trauma care.White House vows veto on Dems’ bill to end shutdown without wall money…

That includes $12 billion in new money for foreign aid, $2 billion in funding Mr. Trump doesn't want to see in the Environmental Protection Agency and $7.1 billion he says isn’t needed in the Housing and Urban Development Department.

A top federal prosecutor in Utah is continuing to investigate allegations that the FBI abused its powers in surveilling a former Trump campaign adviser and should have done more to investigate the Clinton Foundation, according to a source familiar with the matter.
While the Justice Department has not publicly commented on the investigation in almost a year, the source said acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker told former Attorney General Ed Meese during a breakfast meeting in Washington on Wednesday that US Attorney John Huber is continuing his investigation into the wide-ranging allegations.

12 Percent: Paul Ryan’s Favorability Bottoms Out as Former Speaker Leaves Congress…
January 3, 2019
The survey showed only 12 percent viewed Ryan favorably, while a supermajority of 71 percent viewed him unfavorably and 17 percent were unsure.
Ryan’s plummet from the top of the political world into popular obscurity as he leaves government for what he says will be the last time marks one of the most historic collapses of a major figure in the history Republican Party. First elected to represent Wisconsin’s first congressional district in 1999, Ryan raced to the top of the GOP conference in the House, quickly becoming a star in grassroots GOP circles and known for the perception that he was somehow a budget whiz.
