U.S. appeals court to revisit open carrying of guns…
February 8, 2019
In an order on Friday, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said it will revisit whether Hawaii acted lawfully in denying the plaintiff George Young a permit to openly carry a loaded gun.
Circuit Judge Diarmuid O’Scannlain wrote for a 2-1 majority last July 24 that “we do not take lightly the problem of gun violence, which the State of Hawaii has understandably sought to fight,” but that the state nevertheless violated Young’s rights.
Friday’s order means an 11-judge appeals court panel will rehear the case. A hearing has yet to be scheduled.

Genetically modified T-cells hunting down and killing cancer cells. Represents one of the next major frontiers in clinical oncology…
February 8, 2019
What are we seeing here?
This video uses a pretty cool label free, live imaging technique to image mouse T-cells killing mouse tumor cells. Cells were imaged for over 6 hours at a frequency of 1 image every 20 seconds. Why is this a major frontier in medicine?
It is a major frontier, because the past few years have seen a major resurgence in interest in reprogramming T-cells to kill cancer cells. TCRs represent a way of targeting intracellular peptides through TCR-pMHC interactions. So tumor-specific, intracellular proteins can be recognized by T-cells if you design the right TCR. We are already seeing the first hints that this might actually work in the clinic.Massachusetts Set to Legalize Abortion Up to Birth…

Currently, abortions in the state are banned after 24 weeks unless the woman’s life is in danger due to the pregnancy or, if the pregnancy would pose a “grave impairment of her physical or mental health.” The bill, known as the Remove Obstacles and Expand Abortion Access Act (ROE Act), would get rid of the “grave impairment” language so that an abortion could take place after 24 weeks if the pregnancy risks “her physical or mental health, or in cases of lethal fetal anomalies, or where the fetus is incompatible with sustained life outside the womb.”
