While her identity remains a mystery, a makeshift memorial sprouted up Thursday on a popular equestrian trail to a young girl whose lifeless body was found stuffed into a black duffel bag in the light brush.
The Los Angeles County coroner's office took a step toward unraveling one of the mysteries surrounding the 55-pound girl by conducting an autopsy Thursday to determine how she died. With no obvious signs of trauma, detectives are turning to the medical examiners for answers. The results, however, are being kept under wraps by detectives, a sheriff’s spokeswoman said.
U.S. District Court Judge S. James Otero in Los Angeles said the suit was irrelevant after Trump and his former personal lawyer agreed not to penalize Daniels for violating a nondisclosure agreement she signed in exchange for a $130,000 payment.
Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, had wanted a court to declare the agreement illegal so she could speak out without fear of financial penalties if she violated it.
Documents obtained by NBC 7 Investigates show the U.S. government created a secret database of activists, journalists, and social media influencers tied to the migrant caravan and in some cases, placed alerts on their passports.
...CBP told our colleagues at NBC News that the names in the database are all people who were present during violence that broke out at the border in November. The agency also said journalists are being tracked so that the agency can learn more about what started that violence.
The Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), a non-profit media organization, published a set of reports this week detailing a complex money laundering scheme “to channel billions of dollars out of Russia” which it and Lithuanian news site 15min.lt uncovered.
“The data, which was compiled from multiple sources, represents one of the largest releases of banking information ever, involving some 1.3 million leaked transactions from 238,000 companies,” worth $470 billion, the project website describes.
"Among the counterparties on these transactions were major Western banks such as Citigroup Inc., Raiffeisen, and Deutsche Bank. The dozens of companies in the system also generated $8.8 billion of internal transactions to obscure the origin of the cash."
Claims her agency has uncovered 'recycling rings' that let trafficked adults reuse the same children over and over again to pose as family units. Nielsen also says rape is so common among migrant caravans that every girl over age 10 who enters the U.S. without papers is given a pregnancy test.
For the first time ever, the 643rd Military Police Company will head to Guantanamo Bay. They’ll be responsible for the facility’s detainee operations.
It’s a mission that lasts about a year, and it’s a sacrifice soldiers and their families make together. For the family of Specialist E4 Andre Vasquez, this first deployment leaves them filled with emotions. But they know they’ll be able to stay in touch through letters, pictures, and phone calls.
Google’s senior director of U.S. public policy, Adam Kovacevich appeared to describe the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) as a “sideshow Circus,” in a leaked audio recording in which he also argued that Google should remain a sponsor of the conference to “steer” the conservative movement “away from nationalistic and incendiary comments.”
The bill would change the state's top priority from promoting oil and gas to protecting human health and safety and would give local governments authority over the location of new wells, a power now held by state regulators.
The far-reaching measure also would reorganize the Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, reducing the number of industry representatives and adding commissioners with expertise in environmental protection and public health.
"I would like to point out that a lot of the information out there was inaccurate and there were numerous agencies involved in this investigation," the statement continued. "As a standard procedure when there are allegations of information being leaked, an internal investigation has been opened and we are also looking at our vulnerabilities."
"In the first two weeks of February 2019, Ocasio- Cortez posted numerous videos of official House floor and committee proceedings on her political Twitter and Instagram accounts," the complaint reads. "Her posts prominently displayed both official House photographs and video footage, on which she commented and instructed viewers to watch the videos."
"Ironically, in one of the posts she discussed the ethics standards to which she should be held," it continues. "Additionally, on Ocasio-Cortez's political Instagram page, she directly links to her official House Instagram account and includes a link for political contributions, alongside the posts of official video footage and her comments on official action. There are numerous ethics rules violated in this case, all of which require separation between official action and resources and political action and fundraising."
House ethics rules prohibit Members from using official taxpayer-backed resources for any political or campaign-related activities.
In a six-page order, U.S. District Judge George Russell III, an Obama appointee, rules he must lift his order “because the court is bound by the Supreme Court’s decision” that essentially green lighted Trump’s policy.
Russell was one of four district judges to have issued an order against the transgender military ban, which Trump announced in a series of tweets pledging to bar transgender people from the armed forces “in any capacity.”
But in January, the Supreme Court lifted two of these orders issued by judges in Ninth Circuit, essentially allowing the military to enforce Trump’s ban as litigation against it proceeds through the courts.
“They’re overwhelmingly not criminals,” Kelly said Wednesday. “They’re people coming up here for economic purposes. I don’t blame them for that.”
He also reiterated his position that a border wall spanning the entire U.S.-Mexico border would be a “waste of money,” despite overseeing the beginning of what would become the longest government shutdown in U.S. history over Trump’s demand that Congress fund the wall.
Coffee producers in Peru are abandoning their farms to work on plantations that grow coca, the main ingredient in cocaine, due to slumping coffee prices and delays in certifying organic beans, the country’s main coffee association said on Monday.
The group, the Junta Nacional del Cafe (JNC), said farmers starting migrating to drug-trafficking regions in December to work on coca plantations, where they can earn higher pay of between 70 and 120 soles ($21 and $36) per day.
Washington State University's (WSU) Abdelrhman Mohamed and colleagues have captured these microorganisms straight from their source to study them. "This was the first time such bacteria were collected in situ in an extreme environment like an alkaline hot spring," said Mohamed... these specific microorganisms can literally eat pollution. They do this by turning toxic pollutants into less harmful substances and generating electricity in the process.
Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) on Wednesday slammed former National Intelligence Director James Clapper for claiming he did not purposely lie to Congress when asked about an NSA mass surveillance program in March 2013, saying he sent the longtime intelligence official the question ahead of the hearing.
France’s most senior cardinal was found guilty on Thursday of failing to report allegations of sexual abuse of minors by a priest to authorities.
Cardinal Philippe Barbarin was given a six-month suspended prison sentence for providing cover for the Rev. Bernard Preynat by not going to authorities about the alleged abuse between July 2014 and June 2015.
Preynat himself will be subject to a trial next year, where he will face allegations stemming from 13 cases of alleged sexual abuse. There were a total 85 alleged victims, but due to the statute of limitations, most cases are too old to be presented in court.
