Privacy rights versus press freedoms took center stage Wednesday at an explosive federal appeals court hearing in New York, where lawyers argued to unseal confidential court files that could reveal evidence of an underage sex trafficking operation allegedly run by New York multimillionaire Jeffrey Epstein and his partner, British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit reserved judgment in the case, but the panel suggested it was leaning toward the release to the public of vast portions of the court record. The file on the case, which was settled in 2017, contains more than 1,000 documents, lawyers said during oral arguments led by the Miami Herald, which seeks to open the entire file.
The 47-year-old is facing a first-degree murder charge in the gruesome slaying of his wife Keri 'KC' McClanahan, 28, in November 2017. During the hearing, officers who responded to the murder scene testified that they found McClanahan outside the condominium covered in blood. One officer said: 'I thought he was trying to fake a seizure' by convulsing
A trail of blood led to a room where KC McClanahan was lying in a pool of blood. McClanahan's former cellmate at the Salt Lake County Jail also testified Tuesday. He said McClanahan confessed to stabbing his wife 16 to 20 times with her knife.
...since the wage increase, Whole Food employees have told the Guardian that they have experienced widespread cuts that have reduced schedule shifts across many stores, often negating wage gains for employees.
“My hours went from 30 to 20 a week,” said one Whole Foods employee in Illinois.
Workers interviewed for this story were reluctant to speak on the record for fear of retaliation.
All the bad press about Facebook might be catching up to the company. New numbers from Edison Research show an an estimated 15 million fewer users in the United States compared to 2017. The biggest drop is in the very desirable 12- to 34-year-old group. Marketplace Tech got a first look at Edison's latest social media research. It revealed almost 80 percent of people in the U.S. are posting, tweeting or snapping, but fewer are going to Facebook. Marketplace’s Kimberly Adams talked with Larry Rosin, president of Edison Research. The following is an edited transcript of their conversation.
American and European negotiators are at odds over what to include in a prospective trade deal, ratcheting up trans-Atlantic tensions and jeopardizing talks before they even begin. Trump administration officials insist that any deal must address the agricultural trade barriers that the president says put American farmers at a disadvantage, in part because such an agreement would be more likely to win congressional approval. European officials counter that agriculture was never on the table — not last July, and not now.
“It should cover industrial goods, and that’s it,” Cecilia Malmstrom, the European trade commissioner, said in Bucharest, Romania, last month. “We are not talking about agriculture.”
The United States disagrees. Top Trump administration officials say agriculture was always going to be part of the trade equation, even if that is not what the president and Mr. Juncker initially agreed to in their meeting.
An unexpected shot was fired at India this week by the Trump administration as part of its trade policy. India was hit with added tariffs to agricultural products and auto parts, among other goods it exports to the U.S., at the direction of President Donald Trump and his campaign of "getting tough" on India.
A homeless man and a woman have pleaded guilty to federal charges in the United States over a GoFundMe scheme that netted $US400,000 with a phony story about him coming to her aid.
The scheme raised $US400,000 ($550,000), which the couple claimed would be donated to Bobbitt.
Instead, New Jersey authorities said, the three split the money and spent lavishly, including on a car, designer bags, and trips to Las Vegas, Disneyland, Disney World, the Grand Canyon and New York City.
In a new study on the archaeological site at Huanchaquito-Las Llamas, archaeologists explain that the children’s hearts were apparently ripped from their bodies. The grisly location, which is near the UNESCO world heritage site of Chan Chan, is the largest known mass sacrifice site of children in the Americas, they say.
The remains of over 200 llamas, or possibly alpacas, were also discovered across an area spanning more than 7,000 square feet. “Cut marks transecting the sternums and displaced ribs suggest both the children and llamas may have had their chests cut open, possibly during ritual removal of the heart,” scientists explain, in a statement. Analysis of the human remains reveals that they were boys and girls aged between 5 and 14.
Danish police on Thursday said they had launched prosecutions against 14 people suspected of sharing on social media the murder video of one of the two young Scandinavian hikers killed in Morocco.
A video circulating on social networks at the time, believed authentic by authorities, showed one of the murders in the High Atlas mountains.
"The 14 people are accused of violating the penal code by sharing the video -- usually via Facebook Messenger or other social networks," said East Jutland police chief Michael Kjeldgaard in a statement.
Agents apprehended a group of 112 illegal aliens at the border wall near downtown just after midnight. At about the same time agents working further east were processing a group of 252 aliens apprehended at the border just west of Bowie High School. Throughout the morning hours several smaller groups also arrived at multiple locations along the border in the El Paso metropolitan area. In just a few hours the total number taken into custody exceeded 500. An unaccompanied 2-year-old child was also found among one of the groups. The U. S. Border Patrol is currently working with international and domestic agencies in order to locate the parent(s).
