April 18, 2019
... Now, an X-ray signal dubbed XT2 from a galaxy 6.6 billion light-years away has revealed another neutron star merger, which left behind a single, heavier neutron star with an incredibly powerful magnetic field: a magnetar.
“We’ve found a completely new way to spot a neutron star merger,” said Yongquan Xue of the University of Science and Technology of China in a press release. Xue is lead author of a paper on the finding, published April 11 in Nature. Furthermore, he says, “The behavior of this X-ray source matches what one of our team members predicted for these events.”
Officer says partner fired before he could analyze threat…
April 18, 2019
The partner of a Minneapolis police officer who fatally shot an unarmed woman testified Thursday that he didn't fire his own weapon because he hadn't fully analyzed the possible threat, agreeing with a prosecutor's characterization that it would have been "premature" to use deadly force. Officer Matthew Harrity is a key witness in the trial of Mohamed Noor, who fired a single shot at Justine Ruszczyk Damond as she approached the officers' squad car on July 15, 2017.
Damond had placed two 911 calls that night to report a possible sexual assault in the alley behind her home. Struck in the abdomen, the 40-year-old dual citizen of the U.S. and Australia bled to death in an incident that sparked anger and disbelief in both countries.

April 18, 2019
Employees at Henderson Behavioral Health treated Nikolas Cruz for nearly a decade before he shot and killed 17 people at Parkland’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High. His lawyers want a judge to allow them to interview clinic employees “informally” — without prosecutors present.
The defense team made the case Thursday at a hearing for Cruz, 20, who is facing the death penalty for the slaughter at the Parkland school in February 2018. As with all death-penalty cases, defense lawyers are hoping to uncover “mitigation” that might sway jurors to spare their client execution.WIRED: 15 Months Of Fresh Hell Inside Facebook…

Kyrsten Sinema Bucks Party, Calls On Lawmakers To Better Secure The Border…
April 18, 2019
“Arizonans bear the brunt of Washington’s failure to address our broken immigration system. We must secure the border with a comprehensive, smart, bipartisan approach – we’re calling on [the Department of Homeland Security] to send additional resources and staff to AZ ports,” the first-term senator tweeted Wednesday.
Sinema’s calls for better border security was a far cry from what many of her colleagues in the Senate are demanding. Nineteen Senate Democrats, including every Democratic presidential candidate in the upper chamber of Congress, sent a letter to appropriation leaders demanding a reduction in funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and President Donald Trump’s immigration agenda.
