First Public Schools To Engage Facial Recognition…
June 4, 2019
Next week, a school district in western New York will become the first in the United States to pilot a facial recognition system on its students and faculty.
The Lockport pilot comes amid increased scrutiny of facial recognition’s efficacy across the US, including growing civil rights concerns and worries that the tech may serve to further entrench societal biases. Earlier this month, San Francisco banned police from using facial recognition, and similar bills in the US hope to do the same...
UPDATE: The New York State Education Department has instructed Lockport to delay its use of facial recognition technology.

June 4, 2019
Capt. Aaron Rugh ordered Cmdr. Christopher Czaplak removed from the case after lawyers for Special Operations Chief Edward "Eddie" Gallagher accused prosecutors of attaching tracking software to emails sent to them and a Navy Times journalist in a bid to find the source of leaks to the media. In his ruling, Rugh said it was not in his power to determine prosecutorial misconduct, but there was the possibility of a conflict of interest that required Czaplak to be removed.

June 4, 2019
Gavin Newsom said Leslie Van Houten is still a threat, even though she has spent nearly half a century behind bars. It was the third time a governor has halted the release of the youngest member of Manson’s murderous cult. “While I commend Ms Van Houten for her efforts at rehabilitation and acknowledge her youth at the time of the crimes, I am concerned about her role in these killings and her potential for future violence,”

Emmanuel Aranda, 24, was sentenced in a Hennepin County District Court, two weeks after he agreed to the prison term and pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree murder, a crime that carries a maximum sentence of 20 years behind bars, said Chuck Laszewski, spokesman for the county’s district attorney’s office... He admitted dropping the boy nearly 40 feet (12 meters), telling investigators he had been visiting the mall for years to try to talk to women, but was rejected and became angry, prosecutors wrote in a criminal complaint. Aranda said he initially intended to kill an adult, but chose the boy instead.
California state bar moves to suspend Avenatti’s law license’…
June 4, 2019
The California State Bar, which oversees discipline for all California-licensed attorneys, issued a "consumer alert" Monday evening concerning Michael Avenatti, saying it was moving to suspend him from the practice of law because his alleged conduct "poses a substantial threat of harm to clients or the public."... Avenatti responded, "The action by the CA State Bar is nothing more than a 'pile-on' and was entirely expected in light of the pending charges. I offered to cooperate with the Bar and instead they decided to issue a press release as a stunt. I look forward to being fully exonerated by the facts."
Judge rejects Democrats’ attempt to block funds transfer for border wall…
June 4, 2019
“This is a case about whether one chamber of Congress has the ‘constitutional means’ to conscript the Judiciary in a political turf war with the President over the implementation of legislation,” McFadden wrote. “The Judiciary cannot reach the merits of this dispute, it contends, because the Constitution grants the House no standing to litigate these claims.” “And while the Constitution bestows upon Members of the House many powers, it does not grant them standing to hale the Executive Branch into court claiming a dilution of Congress’s legislative authority. The Court therefore lacks jurisdiction to hear the House’s claims and will deny its motion,” he continued.

The European Union statistics agency said Tuesday that unemployment fell to 7.6% in April from 7.7% in March as 64,000 fewer people were unemployed. The figure was the lowest since August 2008. Compared with a year ago, more than a million fewer people were unemployed... While the unemployment rate reflects the positive effects of earlier quarters of growth, current indicators are sending mixed signals about prospects for the rest of the year.
For The First Time, Physicists Have Produced a Stunning Type of Plasma Jet in The Lab…
June 4, 2019
"We are now creating stable, supersonic, and strongly magnetised plasma jets in a laboratory that might allow us to study astrophysical objects light years away," says one of the team leaders, astrophysicist Edison Liang from Rice University in Texas. The researchers trained 20 individual laser beams into a circular shape on a plastic target to produce puffs of plasma, which were then pressurised as they expanded to create a plasma jet four millimetres (0.16 inches) in length, with a magnetic field strength of over 100 tesla (about 10,000 times stronger than a small bar magnet).
Amazon And Facebook Ready To Read Your Emotions…
June 4, 2019
Facebook wants a robot that has five senses which can read human emotions. Facebook wants “emotionally sensitive” robots that can explore the world, identify objects and people and enable its users to make more friends, Dailymail reported...
Amazon is also looking into reading human emotions in a completely different way by utilizing a voice-activated wearable device, that will sense its wearer’s state of mind by the tone of voice, Bloomberg reported...
The latest software rush goes well beyond the simple tech of facial recognition. Instead, it goes straight to reading your emotions. Many are preparing thousands of ready applications such as pre-crime analysis and reporting. Just as people mis-interpret emotions on a regular basis, what makes you think algorithms won't either?
Customs Says Facial Recognition Use ‘Is Not A Surveillance Program’…
June 4, 2019
It’s been almost two years since Customs and Border Protection began deploying facial recognition systems at U.S. airports, and despite the recent backlash against the software, the agency’s efforts show no signs of slowing down. But if you ask Deputy Executive Assistant Commissioner John Wagner, the agency’s use of facial recognition falls far short of the dystopian panopticon feared by many of the tech’s critics.
“This is not a surveillance program,” Wagner, who heads CBP’s biometric entry and exit initiative, said in a conversation with Nextgov...
Customs and Border Protection insist that their use of facial recognition systems isn't a surveillance program. They've been known to use it in airports and at the border. Legislators, on the other hand, are finally starting to wake up to the fact that, yes, it IS a surveillance program.
New evidence suggests Satoshi Nakamoto is Paul Solotshi, the creator of encryption software E4M and TrueCrypt…
June 4, 2019
Paul Solotshi Calder Le Roux, a 46-year old criminal mastermind, is the creator of encryption software E4M and TrueCrypt... and author of an uncannily similar manifesto to the one in Bitcoin’s whitepaper in 1998. But that’s not all: Paul Solotshi Calder Le Roux employs similar spelling and language in his writing style to that of Satoshi. He’s interested in gambling (Bitcoin’s initial code had a poker client included), and what’s more, he’s been in jail since 2012 – that’s probably the reason why his 1 million Bitcoin hasn’t moved.
On top of that, the documents included in this article show a connection of Craig Wright to Paul Solotshi. Sound like a 007 movie?...

June 4, 2019
Initially enthusiastic about To the Stars, Greenewald became increasingly skeptical when he was unable to verify many of Elizondo’s claims about the government’s UFO program through FOIA requests and conversations with Pentagon representatives...
Yes, AATIP existed, and it “did pursue research and investigation into unidentified aerial phenomena,” Pentagon spokesperson Christopher Sherwood told me. However, he added: “Mr. Elizondo had no responsibilities with regard to the AATIP program while he worked in OUSDI [the Office of Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence], up until the time he resigned effective 10/4/2017.”...
