Nike nixed the released of the Air Max 1 USA after having already sent the sneakers to retailers because the protesting quarterback said he felt the use of the Betsy Ross flag was offensive and carried slavery connotations, sources told The Wall Street Journal... In response, a Nike spokeswoman told the Journal: “Nike has chosen not to release the Air Max 1 Quick Strike Fourth of July as it featured the old version of the American flag.”
... unusually high numbers of non-Latino migrants, obviously not from Central America, are now reportedly passing from Colombia through Panama on their way to the U.S. southern border. Their numbers range to the tens of thousands, whose vanguards we have already seen at the U.S. Southwest Border in recent months: Cameroonians, Ghanaians, Congolese, Haitians, Cubans, and some from the Middle East.
Word of their successful entries into the United States this year clearly reached home countries because now a swell numbering as many as 35,000 is on an infamous migrant passage through which migrants have long funneled from South America to North America: the Darien Gap.
The Vatican yesterday reaffirmed Catholic teaching that priests cannot reveal what they learn in confession, in an apparent response to moves in Australia and elsewhere to force them to do so in cases of sexual abuse.
A document from the Vatican's Apostolic Penitentiary, which deals with issues of the sacrament of confession, said no government or law could force clergy to violate the seal "because this duty comes directly from God".
The document, which did not mention any countries or the sexual abuse crisis, complained of a "worrying negative prejudice against the Catholic Church"...
Using cultured mouse neural stem cells, the UC Riverside researchers identified the mechanism underlying EC-induced stem cell toxicity as "stress-induced mitochondrial hyperfusion," or SIMH. "SIMH is a protective, survival response," said Prue Talbot, a professor in the Department of Molecular, Cell and Systems Biology who led the research. "Our data show that exposure of stem cells to e-liquids, aerosols, or nicotine produces a response that leads to SIMH." The study, performed on Vuse, a leading EC brand, appears in iScience, an open-access journal from Cell Press.
"Although originally introduced as safer, ECs, such as Vuse and JUUL, are not harmless," said Atena Zahedi, the first author of the research paper who received her doctoral degree in bioengineering this year. "Even short-term exposure can stress cells in a manner that may lead, with chronic use, to cell death or disease. Our observations are likely to pertain to any product containing nicotine."...
There are two new snippets of information which are being introduced here. Firstly, users will be told whether there are any delays on the bus to be aware of... Secondly, the Maps application will begin to tell users whether they are likely to snag a seat on an up-coming bus, train or underground journey. This section is more guesswork than anything else, using data collected on journeys through the last two years to figure out the current situation. That said, these guesses are usually correct and might be useful for anyone who gets a bit fidgety during the busy periods of travel.
These two features will be rolled out in 200 cities across the world...
The arrests were made in the northern Italian city of Reggio Emilia after an investigation exposed an alleged network of carers who used hours of psychotherapy sessions and electroshocks to convince children their parents had sexually abused them and “alter their memory ahead of the trials”, Italian news agency ANSA reported.
To “brainwash” the children, those arrested allegedly forged child-like drawings with sexual connotations and used electroshock therapy as a “little memory machine” to create false memories of abuse, while the therapists are accused of dressing up as “wicked” children’s story characters.
State Rep. George Till, who sponsored the tax increase bill, said the measure will help keep tobacco products out of the hands of kids, who are most affected by price hikes... The new tax, which passed in February, will not effect packs of cigarettes, which will still be subject to a $3.08 tax. E-cigarettes and other tobacco-substitute products, including those "intended for human consumption by smoking, chewing, or in any other manner," were previously subject to the state's standard 6% sales tax.
The New Jersey state Senate and Assembly passed a budget last month that did not include Murphy's desired tax increase for high-income residents. Murphy signed the budget over the weekend, ending a standoff with moderate Democrats and Republicans and averting a government shutdown in the state. Democrats control both chambers of the legislature in New Jersey... Murphy also unsuccessfully sought to increase fees for gun owners, opioid manufacturers and corporations that don't provide employee health benefits, according to NJ.com.
Political cartoonist Michael de Adder claimed that he lost the contract due to the Trump image — but the company disputes his assertion... Brunswick News said the decision to bring back another cartoonist had been made “long before this cartoon.” The artist, however, insisted that his ouster was political.
"Unfortunately, like so many other news outlets that have relied on advertising to fund its work, ThinkProgress has seen a significant drop in revenue in recent years, along with other financial strains," Navin Nayak, executive director of the Center for American Progress Action Fund, said in a statement provided to CNN Business. "In addition, events over the last few years have underscored the divergent missions of American Progress and ThinkProgress."
First, there will be a new event at the Lincoln Memorial that is specifically dedicated to honoring the United States armed forces called “Salute to America.”

“We’re gonna have a great Fourth of July in Washington, D.C. It’ll be like no other it’ll be special and I hope follow a lot of people come and it’s going to be about this country and it’s a salute to America,” he said Monday from the Oval Office.
“We’re going to have planes going overhead, the best fighter jets in the world and other planes too. And we’re gonna have some tanks stationed outside,” he said. A White House official said the tanks will be stationed on the National Mall...
ederal authorities are warning that white supremacists and other political radicals could look to attack Independence Day revelers on July 4, noting in a bulletin to law enforcement around the country that domestic terrorists “have attacked perceived oppressors, opponents, or enemies engaged in outdoor First Amendment-protected rallies or protests during past summers.”
The warning came in a joint intelligence bulletin issued by the FBI, Department of Homeland Security and National Counterterrorism Center, urging law enforcement personnel to remain vigilant for suspicious activity...
"I just want to toss as many balloons of Muriatic acid in the faces as many Proud Boys I can [sic]," wrote the user "POUND ON YOUR BOY" on a popular right-wing Telegram channel, prompting event co-organizer Enrique Tarrio to contact the FBI and DHS, who will now assist with security at the event.
"I just want to blind as many of you cock suckers are possible [sic]," said the user, adding "We already have the Muriatic acid, wax, and balloons." ...
"It starts with milk shakes, then it escalates to what happened to Andy Ngo" said Tarrio - referring to the conservative journalist who was brutally attacked during a demonstration in Portland, Oregon last weekend. "and now they’re threatening us with acid attacks," Tarrio continued. "All because we want to defend free speech in Washington, D.C."...
A machine at a Facebook mailing facility in Menlo Park alerted employees Monday that a package might contain sarin, according to fire officials. No employees have been exposed to the substance, the Menlo Park Fire District said. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines sarin as a "human-made chemical warfare agent classified as a nerve agent." Facebook runs all of their mail and packages through a machine that can detect dangerous substances, according to the fire district. That machine notified workers that the package in question might contain the substance.
“People don’t flee their homes because they want to,” President Nayib Bukele said Sunday at a news conference in San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador. “They flee their homes because they feel they have to.” “They fled El Salvador, they fled our country,” he continued. “It is our fault.”...
In his comments on Sunday, Mr. Bukele, who took office a month ago, acknowledged the two main forces driving so many of his citizens to take their chances on a perilous migration north in search of a better life: insecurity and economic duress. “They feel safer crossing a desert, three frontiers, and all of the things that may happen in the road to the United States because they feel that’s more secure than living here,” he said. “So we want to make our country safer.”
He also vowed to address the poverty and lack of employment opportunities that so many migrants cite as their reason for fleeing...
In a letter accompanying the list, Providence Bishop Thomas Tobin called the release “a difficult but necessary moment” in the history of the church. “The publication of this list is an expression of the transparency we want to encourage, and the accountability we need to accept,” he wrote...
