35,000 Migrants from around the Globe Moving Through Panama en route to US…
July 1, 2019
... unusually high numbers of non-Latino migrants, obviously not from Central America, are now reportedly passing from Colombia through Panama on their way to the U.S. southern border. Their numbers range to the tens of thousands, whose vanguards we have already seen at the U.S. Southwest Border in recent months: Cameroonians, Ghanaians, Congolese, Haitians, Cubans, and some from the Middle East.
Word of their successful entries into the United States this year clearly reached home countries because now a swell numbering as many as 35,000 is on an infamous migrant passage through which migrants have long funneled from South America to North America: the Darien Gap.
Vatican refuses to violate seal of confession to reveal sex abuse…
July 1, 2019
The Vatican yesterday reaffirmed Catholic teaching that priests cannot reveal what they learn in confession, in an apparent response to moves in Australia and elsewhere to force them to do so in cases of sexual abuse.
A document from the Vatican's Apostolic Penitentiary, which deals with issues of the sacrament of confession, said no government or law could force clergy to violate the seal "because this duty comes directly from God".
The document, which did not mention any countries or the sexual abuse crisis, complained of a "worrying negative prejudice against the Catholic Church"...
Study finds electronic cigarettes damage brain stem cells…
July 1, 2019
Using cultured mouse neural stem cells, the UC Riverside researchers identified the mechanism underlying EC-induced stem cell toxicity as "stress-induced mitochondrial hyperfusion," or SIMH. "SIMH is a protective, survival response," said Prue Talbot, a professor in the Department of Molecular, Cell and Systems Biology who led the research. "Our data show that exposure of stem cells to e-liquids, aerosols, or nicotine produces a response that leads to SIMH." The study, performed on Vuse, a leading EC brand, appears in iScience, an open-access journal from Cell Press.
"Although originally introduced as safer, ECs, such as Vuse and JUUL, are not harmless," said Atena Zahedi, the first author of the research paper who received her doctoral degree in bioengineering this year. "Even short-term exposure can stress cells in a manner that may lead, with chronic use, to cell death or disease. Our observations are likely to pertain to any product containing nicotine."...
Google Maps to start predicting crowdedness on public transport…
July 1, 2019
There are two new snippets of information which are being introduced here. Firstly, users will be told whether there are any delays on the bus to be aware of... Secondly, the Maps application will begin to tell users whether they are likely to snag a seat on an up-coming bus, train or underground journey. This section is more guesswork than anything else, using data collected on journeys through the last two years to figure out the current situation. That said, these guesses are usually correct and might be useful for anyone who gets a bit fidgety during the busy periods of travel.
These two features will be rolled out in 200 cities across the world...
Italian mayor among 18 arrested for allegedly brainwashing and selling children…
July 1, 2019
The arrests were made in the northern Italian city of Reggio Emilia after an investigation exposed an alleged network of carers who used hours of psychotherapy sessions and electroshocks to convince children their parents had sexually abused them and “alter their memory ahead of the trials”, Italian news agency ANSA reported.
To “brainwash” the children, those arrested allegedly forged child-like drawings with sexual connotations and used electroshock therapy as a “little memory machine” to create false memories of abuse, while the therapists are accused of dressing up as “wicked” children’s story characters.
Vermont imposes 92% tax on e-cigarettes…
July 1, 2019
State Rep. George Till, who sponsored the tax increase bill, said the measure will help keep tobacco products out of the hands of kids, who are most affected by price hikes... The new tax, which passed in February, will not effect packs of cigarettes, which will still be subject to a $3.08 tax. E-cigarettes and other tobacco-substitute products, including those "intended for human consumption by smoking, chewing, or in any other manner," were previously subject to the state's standard 6% sales tax.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines sarin as a "human-made chemical warfare agent classified as a nerve agent." Facebook runs all of their mail and packages through a machine that can detect dangerous substances, according to the fire district. That machine notified workers that the package in question might contain the substance.
President of El Salvador Says Migrant Deaths in Rio Grande Are ‘Our Fault’…
July 1, 2019
“People don’t flee their homes because they want to,” President Nayib Bukele said Sunday at a news conference in San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador. “They flee their homes because they feel they have to.” “They fled El Salvador, they fled our country,” he continued. “It is our fault.”...
In his comments on Sunday, Mr. Bukele, who took office a month ago, acknowledged the two main forces driving so many of his citizens to take their chances on a perilous migration north in search of a better life: insecurity and economic duress. “They feel safer crossing a desert, three frontiers, and all of the things that may happen in the road to the United States because they feel that’s more secure than living here,” he said. “So we want to make our country safer.”
He also vowed to address the poverty and lack of employment opportunities that so many migrants cite as their reason for fleeing...
