DOJ will not bring charges against a New York police officer for the death of Eric Garner…
July 16, 2019
The Tuesday decision comes a day before the five-year anniversary of Garner’s death. Garner, 43, was arrested for allegedly selling untaxed cigarettes and during the arrest NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo was filmed with his arm around the unarmed black man’s neck. Garner, who was asthmatic, was heard saying “I can’t breathe” a number of times during the apprehension. A medical examiner ruled the death to be a homicide and said that neck and chest compression was the cause, but a grand jury declined to indict Pantaleo on criminal charges.

R. Kelly expected to appear for court hearing Today…
July 16, 2019
Federal judges were supposed to meet Monday in Chicago to figure out how to proceed in the case that involves separate indictments out of Chicago and New York but that will be discussed Tuesday before Kelly is arraigned.
After that, a judge is expected to rule on whether Kelly can be released on bond in the Chicago indictment before facing the New York charges. Prosecutors want Kelly to remain in federal custody, where he’s been since his arrest Thursday, because they say he’s dangerous and a flight risk.

July 16, 2019
In an opinion that must still be approved by U.S. District Judge Dana L. Christensen, the magistrate judge, Jeremiah C. Lynch, recommended a default judgment against Anglin, who failed to appear for a deposition in April. But Lynch went further than finding for Gersh on procedural grounds: He recommended that Christensen order Anglin, who is in his mid-30s, to pay $4,042,438 in compensatory damages and $10 million, the maximum under state law, in punitive damages for "the particularly egregious and reprehensible nature of Anglin's conduct."
Former Israeli PM Ehud Barak: I Visited Epstein’s Island But Never Met Any Girls…
July 16, 2019
In June, Netanyahu’s attempts to taint hardline former defense minister Avigdor Lieberman as a “left-winger” provoked laughter from reporters. So he wasted no time after Epstein’s arrest tweeting a published article about Barak’s alleged financial ties to Epstein, adding ominously, “and the media is silent.”
Two days later, Netanyahu tweeted a video juxtaposing Epstein’s mug shot with a 2016 photograph of Barak exiting Epstein’s Manhattan townhouse. This time, the caption was “What else did the sex offender give Ehud Barak?"...

Jeff Bezos looks to reduce the “price of admission” to space exploration…
July 16, 2019
In an exclusive interview with "CBS Evening News" anchor Norah O'Donnell, Bezos said he aims to reduce the "price of admission" to space.
"It takes hundreds of millions of dollars to even just get started with something interesting. What I do is reduce that price of admission with reusable space vehicles, so that the next generation, you can actually have two kids in a bedroom make a great space company," he said...BLOOMBERG: To Break Google’s Monopoly on Search, Make Its Index Public. The tech giant doesn’t have to be dismantled. Sharing its crown jewel might reshape the internet…
July 16, 2019
Doesn’t Google already share its index with everyone in the world? Yes, but only for single searches. I’m talking about requiring Google to share its entire index with outside entities—businesses, nonprofit organizations, even individuals—through what programmers call an application programming interface, or API.
Google already allows this kind of sharing with a chosen few, most notably a small but ingenious company called Startpage, which is based in the Netherlands... With access to Google’s index—the most extensive in the world, by far—Startpage gives you great search results, but with a difference. Google tracks your searches and also monitors you in other ways, so it gives you personalized results. Startpage doesn’t track you—it respects and guarantees your privacy—so it gives you generic results...
If entities worldwide were given unlimited access to Google’s index, dozens of Startpage variants would turn up within months; within a year or two, thousands of new search platforms might emerge, each with different strengths and weaknesses...
These aren’t just alternatives to Google, they are competitors—thousands of search platforms, each with its special focus and emphasis, each drawing on different subsets of information from Google’s ever-expanding index, and each using different rules to decide how to organize the search results they display...
We would love to see the legal theory that can compel a company to turn over its core asset out into the public domain. Regardless, hypothetically speaking, it's an ok idea, but Google will have to release their search patents along with it, otherwise, there's no point.

Google’s Remarkably Close Relationship With the Obama White House, in Two Charts...
July 16, 2019
Well what if I told you a Policy Director at Facebook was Nancy Pelosi's Chief of Staff before taking said job directing policy at Facebook? What if I told you the head of algorithm policy at Facebook worked for Hillary at The State Department? Or that the Head of Content Policy worked for the Hillary presidential campaign? What if I told you the person in charge of privacy policy at Facebook used to work for Al Franken, before he worked for Senator Bonoff, before he worked for Congressman Oberstar? Or that the Director in charge of "countering hate and extremism" at Facebook came from the Clinton Foundation? Did you know that the person at Facebook who currently "oversees programs on countering hate speech and promoting pluralism", and "develops internal third party education and drives thought leadership on hate speech and content moderation" was one of Obama's policy advisers at The White House? Do you even know what "pluralism" is?...

Beto O’Rourke raised just $3.6 million in the second quarter…
July 16, 2019
The total, which O'Rourke's campaign will send to supporters tonight in an email, is less than half the $9.4 million O’Rourke raised in the first quarter, and well below the $6.1 million O'Rourke raised in the 24 hours after he announced his presidential campaign in March... In the email, obtained by POLITICO, O’Rourke’s campaign confirmed he has amassed enough small donors to meet the threshold necessary to qualify for the fall presidential debates — a lifeline for his campaign and a major advantage over other low-polling candidates.

About a dozen elders, or kupuna, sat in chairs at the start of the road on Monday, committed to being arrested if need be. Another eight shackled themselves to each other over a grate in the road. They acted after state officials announced they would close the road to the summit of Mauna Kea so they could begin bringing equipment to the construction site in coming days. The confrontation was a dramatic start to what could be weeks or more of protests pitting scientific discovery against cultural preservation and indigenous rights.
That disgraced British Ambassador to The U.S. leaked classified Intel to an American MSM journalist…
July 16, 2019
According to one current and one former U.S. government official speaking on the condition of anonymity, Darroch repeatedly leaked classified U.S. intelligence information, including highly classified information, to a journalist for a U.S.-based media outlet. The sources are consolidated by the reaction my related inquiries have received from other government officials. These leaks are unrelated to the diplomatic cables which sparked Trump's anger and Darroch's departure.
Still, one source says that the U.S. government was so alarmed by Darroch's leaks that it launched an official investigation to find the source of the information. That source described the leaked intelligence as “very sensitive,” and suggested that exigent U.S. security concerns motivated the investigation. That source says that non-U.S. government derived records showed the ambassador and journalist exchanging messages on a continuing basis. The source emphasized that these communications were not derived from U.S. government actions...
70 current, former CBP employees under probe for sexist, racist social media posts…
July 16, 2019
The investigation was in response to ProPublica exposing a secret Facebook group earlier this month of 9,500 former and current CBP employees named "I'm 10-15" where some members made racist and sexists posts about Latino members of Congress critical of the treatment of migrants held at border detention centers... On Monday, Matthew Klein, assistant commissioner of CBP's Office of Professional Responsibility, told reporters in a phone call that the majority of those identified for the investigation were members of the "I'm 10-15" group, which is CBP code for "Aliens in custody," while the rest were members of two other similar Facebook groups.
An interesting article about the beginning of cyborgization amongst different groups of people…

Why I’m turning my son into a cyborg
I’ve chosen to turn my son into a cyborg and change the definition of what it means to be human. But do my son’s engineered superpowers make him more human, or less?
[...]
Life gave me an amazing and exhausting little boy. It also gave me unique tools to help him overcome his challenges. The first came in the form of a crazy CIA scheme to create an AI to catch liars. Years ago, on my very first machine-learning project as an undergrad, I helped build a real-time lie-detection system that could work off raw video.

I want to build a world where everyone has superpowers. And one of the ways to do that is through a field known as “neuroprosthetics.”Neuroprosthetics are implants that directly interface with your brain. They’re already transforming many people’s lives today... These technologies can and should be used to give people with disabilities—the non-neurotypical—the ability to exist and thrive in a neurotypical world. But what happens once everyone has a superpower in their back pocket? What happens when we all want to become superhuman?
Terraforming Mars with strange silica blanket could let plants thrive…
July 16, 2019
Nurturing life on Mars may be as simple as bringing a thin blanket of superlight silica. Aerogel, a lightweight material made mostly of air, could be used to heat up the ground and protect it from harmful radiation while allowing enough light through for plants to grow... Their solution is based on a phenomenon called the solid-state greenhouse effect, which happens when sunlight passes through layers of translucent snow or ice and is absorbed. The ice insulates the deeper layers while allowing them to get warmed up by the light... Instead of snow or ice, Wordsworth and his colleagues tested silica aerogel, which is one of the best thermal insulators we know of. They found that an aerogel panel just two centimetres thick with Mars-like levels of sunlight shining through it could warm the area underneath by more than 50° C. It also blocked more than 60 per cent of UV radiation, and more than 99.5 per cent of the most harmful type, UVC, while letting through the visible light necessary for photosynthesis...
