Breast implants tied to rare form of cancer recalled at FDA request…
July 24, 2019
Breast implant maker Allergan Inc. issued a worldwide recall Wednesday for textured models because of a link to a rare form of cancer. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said it called for the removal after new information showed Allergan's Biocell breast implants with a textured surface account for a disproportionate share of rare lymphoma cases. The move follows similar action in France, Australia and Canada. The FDA is not recommending women with the implants have them removed if they are not experiencing problems. The FDA had ruled earlier this year they could stay on the market.

July 24, 2019
Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said in an interview Tuesday that she does not favor proposals put forth by some Democratic presidential candidates who have advocated changing the number of Supreme Court justices if the Democrats win the presidency.
[...]
"Nine seems to be a good number. It's been that way for a long time," she said, adding, "I think it was a bad idea when President Franklin Roosevelt tried to pack the court."

Ginsburg's interview with NPR was wide-ranging, discussing, among other things, her health... "There was a senator, I think it was after my pancreatic cancer, who announced, with great glee, that I was going to be dead within six months," she recalled. "That senator, whose name I have forgotten, is now dead himself, and I," she added with a smile, "am very much alive."...Puerto Rico governor in ‘Rickyleaks’ scandal expected to quit…

Rosselló had made no announcement by early Wednesday, but major local media were reporting his resignation was imminent.
Protesters had cheered those reports late on Tuesday but warned that his departure would not end the demonstrations now entering their 12th day.

July 24, 2019

China ‘ready to go to war’ if Taiwan tries to gain independence, major defence ministry report says…
July 24, 2019
The US, which provides arms to Taiwan, was accused of “undermining global strategic stability” and named at the top of a list of “prominent destabilising factors” in the white paper, the first of its kind to be released by the Chinese government since President Xi Jinping came to power.
Presenting the document, defence ministry spokesman Wu Qian said it was still China’s goal to achieve a peaceful reunification with Taiwan, a territory that split from the Communist Party-ruled mainland in 1949 and is in all practical senses run as an independent democratic nation.
"However, we must firmly point out that seeking Taiwan independence is a dead end," Wu told reporters.
"If there are people who dare to try to split Taiwan from the country, China's military will be ready to go to war to firmly safeguard national sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity," he said...

House passes bill opposing BDS, exposing divide among Democrats…
July 24, 2019
The resolution to put lawmakers on the record opposing the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement to press Israel on human rights issues in its conflict with Palestinians passed easily on a 398-17 vote, with five members voting present. Sixteen Democrats, mostly progressives, voted against it.
The resolution’s opponents included progressive freshmen Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), who support the BDS movement. House Democratic leaders brought the resolution to the floor under a fast-track process that required a two-thirds majority for passage and limited debate to 40 minutes. No one spoke in opposition to the resolution during the allotted debate, but the two progressives delivered floor speeches earlier in the day to express why they’d vote against it.
FTC slaps Facebook with record $5 billion fine, orders privacy oversight…
July 24, 2019
The Federal Trade Commission formally approved a record $5 billion settlement Wednesday with Facebook over the company's privacy policies. Shares of Facebook were down less than half a percent during morning trading, shaving about $1 billion from its market cap and bringing it around $576 billion... The 20-year settlement, which was approved in a 3-2 vote by the agency's commissioners, also includes provisions that aim to create a level of independence from Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's decision-making.
The FTC first started probing Facebook in March 2018 after reports that political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica had accessed the data of 87 million Facebook users. The agency was concerned that Facebook had violated the terms of a previous agreement, which required Facebook to give users very clear notifications when their data was being shared with third parties.

In advance of speeches this week to the NAACP in Detroit and the Urban League in Indianapolis, he released a criminal justice plan that addresses concerns many African Americans have about his past record, including his role on the 1994 crime bill. The campaign then touted the plan in a web ad featuring an African American adviser.

Analysis of the beads suggests they are microtektites, particles that form when the explosive impact of an extraterrestrial object sends molten debris hurtling into the atmosphere where it cools and recrystallizes before falling back to Earth. POLITICO/Morning Consult Poll: Democrats becoming increasingly skeptical of fairness of Russia probe…
July 24, 2019
It’s unclear what accounts for Democrats’ plummeting confidence — it’s possible that they feel the investigation was unfair in that the outcome was too favorable to President Donald Trump; believe that Mueller was boxed in by Trump’s Justice Department; or feel that it’s unfair because the president has not faced any serious consequences as a result of the investigation.
