Epstein case: Feds also investigating ‘uncharged individuals’…
July 26, 2019
Manhattan federal prosecutors are conducting an “ongoing investigation of uncharged individuals” connected to Jeffrey Epstein, according to court papers filed Thursday. The probe was revealed in a court filing that seeks to ensure that evidence in the case against Epstein remains secret. Prosecutors said they planned to give lawyers for the convicted pedophile “certain documents and materials” containing both “confidential” and “highly confidential” information that shouldn’t be made public. But they asked Manhattan federal Judge Richard Berman to first endorse a nine-page order prohibiting the lawyers from sharing the information with anyone not directly involved in Epstein’s case.

China Outlines Space War Plans. PLA white paper confirms space operations a strategic priority for confronting U.S…
July 26, 2019
China's strategy for developing advanced space weapons were disclosed this week in Beijing's first defense white paper issued in years... The report—part policy statement and part propaganda—also claims the United States seeks "absolute military superiority."
[...]
"The U.S. has adjusted its national security and defense strategies, and adopted unilateral policies," the report said. "It has provoked and intensified competition among major countries, significantly increased its defense expenditure, pushed for additional capacity in nuclear, outer space, cyber and missile defense, and undermined global strategic stability."
[...]
On space warfare, the PLA report states that threats to space "loom large" and as a result space security is now among eight vital Chinese strategic interests... While insisting China favors the peaceful use of space, the white paper states that China is developing "relevant technologies and capabilities" for safeguarding satellites while maintaining the ability to safely enter, exit, and openly use space...Mike Pompeo said Thursday he would “happily” go to Tehran to address tensions between the two countries over US sanctions on Iran…

Pompeo explained in an interview with Bloomberg he would willingly appear on Iranian television to explain US reasoning behind the sanctions. "I would welcome the chance to speak directly to the Iranian people... about what it is their leadership has done and how it has harmed Iran," he said.
[...]
He said the US goal is to "create as much stability in the Middle East as we could."
"So we broke out of the deal, we stopped giving them money, we put pressure on the Iranian regime, and we're forcing them to make tough decisions about how they're going to behave," Pompeo said...North Korea says firing of new missile was ‘warning to the South Korean military warmongers’…

The report came after Pyongyang fired two missiles from its east coast into the Sea of Japan on Thursday morning that Seoul says were a new type of short-range ballistic missile that flew about 600 kilometers.
Chicago mayor caught on mic calling police union official a ‘clown’…
July 26, 2019
...At one point, Lightfoot turned to corporation counsel Mark Flessner and said, “Back again. This is this FOP clown,” which was picked up on the meeting’s livestream. “It was not appropriate for me to say that out loud,” the mayor said after the meeting.
When asked if she planned to apologize to Murray or to the union, with which she needs to negotiate a new contract, Lightfoot waffled. “I think I just did. I think I said I shouldn’t have said that out loud,” she said.
Was she sorry she said it or was she sorry her remark got picked up on a hot mic? “I’m sorry that I said it out loud,” she said...
SpaceX Just Unleashed Its Starship Rocket for the First Time…
July 26, 2019
...at a launch facility in Boca Chica, Texas, SpaceX performed the first flight test of its next-generation Starship rocket, which may one day carry humans to Mars. This time around, the prototype vehicle, dubbed Starhopper, was supposed to stay close to home: The plan was for it to fire up its Raptor engine, rise to an altitude of about 60 feet, move sideways a few yards, and land.
When launch time came, smoke obscured any view of the rocket. But when the smoke cleared, Starhopper was back on the ground, not far from where it had started. Elon Musk confirmed the successful hop on Twitter, writing, “Water towers *can* fly.” (As it happens, a water tower would have come in handy: When the rocket landed, it promptly started a fire near the launchpad.)...

Tree stump that should have died is being kept alive by neighboring trees through an interconnected root system, which may change our view from trees as individuals to forests as ‘superorganisms’…
July 26, 2019
A tree stump that should have died is being kept alive by neighbouring trees that are funnelling water and nutrients to it through an interconnected root system. The finding adds to a growing understanding that trees and other organisms can work together for the benefit of a forest... Along with a growing awareness of the way fungi help trees exchange carbon and other nutrients, this relationship undermines the notion of trees as individuals or distinct entities. “And that dramatically changes our view of forest ecosystems as ‘superorganisms’,” says Leuzinger... Foresters have reported living stumps as far back as the 1800s, but this is one of the first studies of how they survive. There are several reasons why neighbouring trees could be supporting the stump. It could be that the stump and its roots offer the living tree more stability in the ground, or that a leafless stump just becomes part of the host tree’s broader root system.

July 26, 2019
Extremists from across Europe joined Daesh in droves in 2014, when the Takfiri terror group launched its campaign of death and destruction in Iraq and Syria. According to the commission, at least 5,500 foreign terrorist fighters left the continent to travel to Iraq and Syria, said Julian King, the European Commission for security. Of those two-thirds were men, and a quarter women. “We think at least 1,400 were killed, died," King said, adding that around 1,600 have since returned. "That leaves 2,500 unaccounted for, we don't know where they are," he added.

Landmark Gene-Editing Work May Help Restore Vision. Researchers will use CRISPR technology to try to help patients with rare disease…
July 26, 2019
Patients are about to be enrolled in the first study to test a gene-editing technique known as CRISPR inside the body to try to cure an inherited form of blindness, per the AP. People with the disease have normal eyes but lack a gene that converts light into signals to the brain that enable sight. The experimental treatment aims to supply kids and adults with a healthy version of the gene they lack, using a tool that cuts or "edits" DNA in a specific spot. It's intended as a onetime treatment that permanently alters the person's native DNA. Two companies, Editas Medicine and Allergan, will test this in up to 18 people around the United States, including Massachusetts Eye and Ear in Boston, starting this fall. Only one other company, Sangamo Therapeutics, has tried gene editing inside the body, to treat metabolic diseases using a tool called zinc fingers...
