Nature magazine's cover story is about a Chinese chip that can run traditional deep learning code and also perform "neuromorophic" operations in the same circuitry. The work’s value seems obscured by a lot of hype about "artificial general intelligence" that has no real justification...
The department removed public access to a number of reports on incarceration in the state, including when presidential candidate Kamala Harris (D.) was California's attorney general. Twice a year, the CDCR releases information about the number of new individuals incarcerated in the California prison system as part of its "Offender Data Points" series. These reports provide important information on demographics, sentence length, offense type, and other figures relevant to criminal justice and incarceration...
Police detained more than 600 people at an unauthorized protest in the Russian capital demanding fair elections, as a recent wave of public discontent in Russia showed few signs of abating. The rallies, protesting the exclusion of opposition candidates from local elections, came a week after more than 1,300 people were detained and dozens injured in similar demonstrations.
The mass protests, which began in Moscow in mid-July, are some of the most significant displays of public dissatisfaction in Russia since President Vladimir Putin returned to the Kremlin in 2012. The rallies, which follow demonstrations on various issues across the country in the past year, come as Mr. Putin’s approval rating has fallen to multiyear lows.
A California school district has ended a lawsuit by lifting its ban on “Bring Your Bible to School Day.” The religious-liberty group Freedom X said the settlement will require the district to change its policies and pay some $15,000 for the lawyers in the case. In a 4-0 vote this week, the Huntington Beach City School District board of trustees endorsed a policy change that will permit “students to engage in religious expression without fear of reprisal.” The dispute began when the principal of John R. Peterson Elementary School was accused of violating the First Amendment rights of two students who sought to hand out flyers to other students promoting “Bring Your Bible to School Day” during lunch and recess.
Karem tweeted that he'd received an email from the White House telling him that as of Monday, his press pass would be "suspended for 30 days." "Yes, I can and will appeal this decision," Karem added. CNN reported that the White House cited Karem's behavior at the July 11 White House social media summit. While waiting for a presidential press conference following the summit, Karem and Gorka got into a shouting match after Karem described the summit attendees as “group of people that are eager for demonic possession."

The strong penetrability of infrared light enables scientists to precisely control the gene editing tool in deep human tissue. The CRISPR-Cas9 technique allows genetic materials to be added, removed or altered in particular locations in the human genome. But it remains a challenge in precision medicine worldwide due to the off-target effect of the gene-editing tool, like causing mutation or even cancer in healthy cells due to the inaccurate excision of genes. The new technique developed by Song’s team has been tested on lab rats with tumors, whose progression was delayed about 20 days after the rat was treated with the new technique...
That sounds a lot better than the shotgun approach of radiation, which also destroys healthy tissue surrounding the tumor.
Four-year-old Aubriana Recinos, and her mother, 23-year-old Carmen Lowe, disappeared in May but were officially reported missing on July 8. Ramirez said the toddler was found at a house in Texas with individuals “involved in human trafficking activities.” “The child was pretty much given to a pimp, an associate of a pimp or family of the pimp for keeping,” said Fayetteville police Maj. Robert Ramirez told WNCN. “The individuals involved are not cooperating.” “It is a ring, it’s a human trafficking ring that the FBI was investigating and these individuals have other children as well,” he added.
"Stay out of El Paso," he told Antifa while appearing on Fox News. He noted that while the group wasn't usually welcome, they especially weren't welcome after the shooting. "Stay out of Texas, basically," Patrick said. "We don't need them coming in on Sept. 1. We didn't need them coming in before this happened." The shooting came roughly a month before a scheduled visit from Antifa, which planned to conduct a "Border Resistance" militancy training tour.
Patrick specifically referred to that scheduled visit while speaking to Fox News, noting that it would be inappropriate especially after the mass shooting. The flyer for the event reportedly showed people shooting arrows at a tower near what appeared to be a border fence. The group issued a "Call to Action" for 10 days in El Paso.
Terms associated with leftist politics did not have such condescending synonyms.
The word “progressive” was described as modern, liberal, advanced, forward-looking, forward-thinking... The word “liberal” had similarly positive results: tolerant, unprejudiced, unbigoted, broad-minded, open-minded,...
Perhaps the most offensive term on Google’s dictionary is the word “patriot.” The synonyms offered are nationalist, loyalist; chauvinist, jingoist, jingo, flag-waver, isolationist, and xenophobe. It almost sounds like they’ve hired Colin Kaepernick to supply their synonyms...
