The Justice Department is wrestling with whether to disclose a name sought by the plaintiffs in a long-running lawsuit that seeks to link the government of Saudi Arabia to the 9/11 attacks…
September 11, 2019
Attorney General William Barr faced a Friday deadline for deciding whether to release the name or to invoke a rarely used state secrets privilege and refuse to divulge the information. But Justice Department officials decided they needed more time, submitting a request to a federal court in New York for an extension until Sept. 12. A judge granted the request...
Black Poverty Hits Record Low Under President Trump…
September 11, 2019
The good news is hidden deep in the 77-page report, Income and Poverty in the United States: 2018, which was released Tuesday, September 10. Table B5 on page 65 shows that poverty among married black families dropped to 18.8 percent, down from 20.2 percent in 2015 and 23.8 percent in 2007, which was the peak of the housing boom and bubble inflated by Congress and President George W. Bush’s terms. Poverty among black female-headed families also dropped to 31.7 percent, down from 35.7 percent in 2015 and 39.7 percent in 2007. Poverty among all black Americans dropped to 20.8 percent, down from 24.1 percent in 2015 and 24.5 percent in 2007
Scientists say they’ve discovered a pair of “radio-emitting bubbles” that stretch hundreds of light-years tall, forming a sort of cosmic hourglass dwarfing everything else in the galactic center…
September 11, 2019
"Our radio observations mainly reveal the walls of the bubbles (think of the surface of a balloon) which have been inflated by an energetic event near the black hole at the center of the Milky Way," Fernando Camilo, chief scientist at the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO), told me. "Inside the bubbles is hot gas."
The discovery is the first major published finding made using the new SARAO MeerKAT telescope, a 64-dish array that launched in July 2018...
Scientists Reveal One Supplement That Helps Depression More Than Others…
September 11, 2019
The research, led by Sydney’s NICM Health Research Institute at Western Sydney University, shines a light on the murky world of supplements and vitamins. The exhaustive meta-synthesis, the first of its kind, provides clearer guidance to consumers and clinicians. The researchers found one supplement more than others has powerful effects on the mind... Across the research, evidence showed omega-3s reduced symptoms of depression beyond the effects of antidepressants alone. While previous research suggests that no dietary supplement, including omega-3s, helped prevent depression, this review shows omega-3s could help treat it.
When looking to increase your omega-3 essential fatty acids it is important to also strike a balance with omega-6. Pasture raised animal fats such as beef fat, lard, and butter are great choice that have a balance of Omega 3 & 6. If you're looking for a supplement, we do not recommend taking fish oil as they are usually highly processed, instead use a fermented cod liver oil and include some grass fed raw butter when you take it to balance it out. If you want a convenient 2-in-1, we suggest Green Pasture's Blue Ice Royal, Butter Oil Cod Liver Oil Blend. If you're interested in learning more listen to this podcast from Sally Fallon Morell, the head of the Weston A. Price Foundation, where she dispels myths and explains how to get the right balance of essential fatty acids in your diet:

September 11, 2019
The event for the Republican Women of Warren County was scheduled to take place in the Cincinnati suburb on Oct. 5, complete with a “Trump Train” ride. But the group behind the event said organizations attached to the GOP program were “threatened/harassed” over their involvement... According to promotional material, three train rides were being offered throughout the day for up to 300 passengers per trip, with tickets ranging from $15 to $20 for children and $20 to $30 for adults. The event was also supposed to feature food trucks, souvenirs and entertainment... Byrne did not give details of the threats, only saying that they referenced legal action and boycotts.
Purdue Pharma reaches tentative settlement in federal opioids lawsuit and some state litigation…
September 11, 2019
The executive committee of lawyers representing the cities, counties and other groups in a consolidated federal lawsuit against Purdue and other drug companies is recommending that the deal be accepted. But some attorneys general, who sued Purdue and its controlling family, the Sacklers, in state courts are still opposed to a deal. Under terms of a plan that has been under discussion for months, the Sacklers would relinquish control of their company. Stamford, Conn.-based Purdue Pharma would declare bankruptcy and be resurrected as a trust whose main purpose would be to combat the opioid epidemic. The deal is said to be worth $10 billion to $12 billion, including a $3 billion payment from the Sacklers’ personal funds. It also would include money from the sale of the family’s international drug conglomerate, Mundipharma, according to the documents and people close to the talks.
New York Area Fire Commissioners Call for New 9/11 Investigation…
September 11, 2019
On July 24, the Franklin Square and Munson Fire Districts voted unanimously for a new investigation, citing “overwhelming evidence” that “pre-planted explosives . . . caused the destruction of the three World Trade Center buildings.” The resolution was written by Commissioner Christopher Gioia, and received overwhelming support from Commissioner Dennis Lyons.

This renewed interest in a proper investigation was sparked last year, when Geoffrey S. Berman, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, filed a petition on behalf of the Lawyers’ Committee for 9/11 Inquiry. The petition highlighted a large body of evidence about the World Trade Center attacks, which was ultimately presented to a grand jury. Berman’s success through the courts gave many New York City firefighters hope that they could finally get to the bottom of what happened on that day, and find justice for the friends and loved ones who were lost...
Water found on a potentially life-friendly alien planet – A super-Earth about 111 light-years away…
September 11, 2019
In a first for astronomers studying worlds beyond our solar system, data from the Hubble Space Telescope have revealed water vapor in the atmosphere of an Earth-size planet. Although this exoplanet orbits a star that is smaller than our sun, it falls within what’s known as the star’s habitable zone, the range of orbital distances where it would be warm enough for liquid water to exist on a planet’s surface.
[...]
K2-18b’s orbit also takes it seven times closer to its star than Earth gets to the sun. But because it circles a type of dim red star known as an M dwarf, that orbit places it in the star's potentially life-friendly zone. Crude models predict that K2-18b’s effective temperature falls somewhere between -100 and 116 degrees Fahrenheit, and if it is about as reflective as Earth, its equilibrium temperature would be roughly the same as our home planet’s.Trump administration readies ban on flavored e-cigarettes amid outbreak of vaping-related deaths…
September 11, 2019
The Trump administration is preparing to ban flavored e-cigarettes as federal health officials call for restrictions to combat an outbreak of a mysterious lung disease that has sickened hundreds and killed at least six people, U.S. health secretary Alex Azar told reporters Wednesday.
The Food and Drug Administration is finalizing its guidance to remove e-cigarette flavors other than tobacco from the market because children are attracted to other flavors, Azar said, following a meeting at the Oval Office with President Donald Trump. It could take the FDA several weeks to develop the guidelines, he said.

The Supreme Court is allowing nationwide enforcement of a new Trump administration rule that prevents most Central American immigrants from seeking asylum in the United States…
September 11, 2019
The justices’ order late Wednesday temporarily undoes a lower-court ruling that had blocked the new asylum policy in some states along the southern border. The policy is meant to deny asylum to anyone who passes through another country on the way to the U.S. without seeking protection there. Most people crossing the southern border are Central Americans fleeing violence and poverty. They are largely ineligible under the new rule, as are asylum seekers from Africa, Asia and South America who arrive regularly at the southern border.

New AI neural network approach detects heart failure from a single heartbeat with 100% accuracy…
September 11, 2019
Dr Massaro said: “We trained and tested the CNN model on large publicly available ECG datasets featuring subjects with CHF as well as healthy, non-arrhythmic hearts. Our model delivered 100% accuracy: by checking just one heartbeat we are able detect whether or not a person has heart failure. Our model is also one of the first known to be able to identify the ECG' s morphological features specifically associated to the severity of the condition.”...

September 11, 2019
Tokyo Electric, or Tepco, has collected more than 1 million tonnes of contaminated water from the cooling pipes used to keep fuel cores from melting since the plant was crippled by an earthquake and tsunami in 2011.
“The only option will be to drain it into the sea and dilute it,” the minister, Yoshiaki Harada, told a news briefing in Tokyo...

The U.S. isn’t building enough houses — and that’s not changing anytime soon, economists say…
September 11, 2019
Home-building activity has never fully recovered from the last recession. Real-estate website Zillow ZG, +0.72% and research firm Pulsenomics conducted a survey of more than 100 economists, real-estate experts and investment strategists to gauge their expectations regarding the U.S. real-estate market. A 54% majority of those experts said they don’t expect new-home construction to reach an annual rate of 1 million units until 2022 or later. And that has implications for buyers. “Without new homes to meet population growth and replace an aging housing stock, home buying is expected to move further out of reach,” Skylar Olsen, Zillow’s director of economic research, said in the report.

McDonald’s acquisition will see drive-thru customers giving orders to an AI…
September 11, 2019
Would you prefer to talk to an AI or a real person when making your McDonald’s drive-thru order? It seems the company believes customers would prefer the former after it agreed to acquire Apprente, a voice-based AI company. Mountain View, California-based Apprente was founded in 2017 to create voice AI platforms for complex, multilingual, multi-accent and multi-item conversational ordering. McDonald’s says the technology will bring faster, simpler, and more accurate order taking at the drive-thru, so no more having to deal with the frustration of finding out you got the wrong meal, hopefully.
