In other words, gun homicides have dropped substantially over the past 25 years — but most Americans believe the opposite to be true. Why? Perhaps in part because of the media focus on multiple-victim shooting incidents in recent years. Perhaps, too, because of the number and deadliness of those incidents. We’ve noted before that the number of fatalities in major mass-shooting incidents has increased dramatically in recent years; it’s possible that people are conflating increases in frequency and deadliness of mass shootings with the United States getting more dangerous generally.
It’s hard not to assume that this influences the politics of the gun debate. Democrats are both much more likely to support new gun restrictions and to believe that the rate of gun murders is higher than it was in 1994, a year that was near the peak of violent crime in recorded U.S. history. Does the latter inform the former?
The good news is that gun homicides are down substantially both as a raw total and as a function of population since 1994. The bad news is that many Americans don’t seem to realize that.
Did not expect this article from WAPO. But here's an observation: Their graphs should of went back further than ‘91 though. Starting at ‘91 makes it look like the Clinton ban may have caused the downturn in gun murders. If you go back further you see a pattern of increases and decreases, ‘93 just happens to have been a particularly high peak followed by a regression back to the mean, and no meaningful increase after the ban ended.
"Regression back to the mean". A concept few are aware of and even fewer subscribe to. It's absolutely legit though, and it illustrates itself so much in life. Sports teams, political wins and losses, gambling, car racing, you name it. We always regress to the mean. Always.
A former Catholic priest who has admitted sexually abusing as many as 30 youths in Chicago’s suburbs, California and Missouri over 25 years and who pleaded guilty to sexual abuse in DuPage County in 2004 faces new charges.
The latest charges against Lenczycki were filed as victims of clergy sexual abuse demand more accountability and transparency from the Catholic church. The Vatican convened a sexual abuse summit Thursday to hear the testimony of several victims.
Now, three and a half years later, much of the leadership team of Planned Parenthood has since resigned and many of the abortionists who appeared in the CMP videos have left Planned Parenthood.
“Pretty much every one who had anything to do with the trafficking of aborted babies is gone from Planned Parenthood, including their CEO Cecile Richards,” said Troy Newman, president of Operation Rescue who also served as a founding board member for the CMP while the undercover investigation took place. “This isn’t something that happened right after the videos came out. Planned Parenthood wields a great deal of political power, which probably helped them think they could withstand the negative press, but now that it is clear that some of that shielding influence is waning. Resignations are still taking place.”
YouTube on Friday said it would prevent channels that promote anti-vax content from running advertising, saying explicitly that such videos fall under its policy prohibiting the monetization of videos with “dangerous and harmful” content. The move comes after advertisers on YouTube pulled their ads from these videos, following inquiries from BuzzFeed News.
Free speech is being attacked much more aggressively now.

For those who think this war is fake, or we are not a considered a major threat, this is a direct attack by Hillary Clinton on 'Q' & 'PRO POTUS' PATRIOTS.
The article referenced has an embedded link that literally TARGETS PRO POTUS/Q Twitter accounts that have been IDENTIFIED by CLINTON/DS as serious threats (ability to shift the narrative).
Twitter has already begun to remove targeted accounts (stages) under false pretenses.
The war is real.
The threat is real.
JUDGEMENT DAY COMING.
.@Politico reports today: "A wide-ranging disinformation campaign aimed at Democratic 2020 candidates is already underway on social media, with signs that foreign state actors are driving at least some of the activity." https://t.co/LjM14jluq8
The region is called the geocorona, part of an atmospheric layer called the exosphere. It's a tenuous cloud of neutral hydrogen that glows in far-ultraviolet light.
Because it's so thin, it's been hard to measure; previously, its upper limit was thought to be around 200,000 kilometres (124,000 miles) from Earth, because that's the point at which solar radiation pressure would override Earth's gravity.
Well, according to data from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) co-owned by the European Space Agency and NASA, that limit doesn't even come close. The geocorona, scientists have found, extends out to as much as 630,000 kilometres (391,000 miles).
The White House said Friday it's "looking into" Labor Secretary Alex Acosta's handling of a secret plea deal with a wealthy financier accused of sexually abusing dozens of underage girls
A federal judge ruled Thursday that prosecutors in Florida violated the rights of victims by reaching the non-prosecution agreement with Jeffrey Epstein. Acosta was the Miami U.S. attorney who oversaw the arrangement.
The Trump administration posted a final rule Friday that would require family planning clinics to be housed in separate buildings from abortion clinics, a move that would cut off Planned Parenthood from some federal funding.
The rule applies to a $286 million-a-year grant, known as Title X, that pays for birth control, testing of sexually transmitted diseases, and cancer screenings for 4 million low-income people. It requires the "physical and financial" separation of family planning services and abortion.
State Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) and Assemblywoman Susan Eggman (D-Stockton) introduced recent legislation “to end blatant discrimination against LGBT young people regarding California’s sex offender registry.”
However, under their bill, SB 145, the offenders would not have to automatically register as sex offenders if the offenders are within 10 years of age of the minor.
A wave of bad news, which also included a dividend cut and a weak outlook for the year, sent shares plunging 26 percent at the opening bell Friday, their largest decline in a single day. Before noon, the company had lost $16 billion of its market value.
Kraft Heinz cited the impairment charge for a stunning $12.6 billion fourth-quarter loss.
Kraft Heinz said the investigation by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is related to its accounting practices in the division that handles interactions with suppliers. The SEC declined to comment.
“We have made the first measurements of aluminium in brain tissue in ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), and we have shown that the brain aluminium content is extraordinarily high. We have identified aluminium in brain tissue as both extracellular and intracellular with the latter involving both neurons and non-neuronal cells. The presence of aluminium in inflammatory cells in the meninges, vasculature, and the grey and white matter is a standout (ie. striking) observation and could implicate aluminium in the etiology (ie. cause) of ASD.”
According to the report, Burrous was engaging in “various sexual activities with his companion” when he inserted a “rock” of meth into his rectum. He reportedly inserted a second rock later on in the encounter, placed a mask on and “doused the filters with ‘poppers.’”
Parents in Santa Barbara, California, are suing a leftist hate group called Just Communities and the local school board there to end the group’s taxpayer-funded so-called implicit bias training that has a powerful anti-white, anti-male, and anti-Christian slant. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Los Angeles, was brought by Fair Education Santa Barbara, a nonprofit formed by parents of children enrolled in the Santa Barbara Unified School District (SBUSD).
The group’s lawyer, Eric Early, calls the curriculum used in the district “radical, discriminatory, and illegal.” In a letter to the district’s counsel last September he wrote that “[t]eachers, parents and students have confidentially expressed their concerns that … [the] discriminatory curriculum has led to increased racial animosity toward Caucasian teachers and students.”
While Robert Kraft was been named as one of those involved in a prostitution sting in Florida, he’s far from the only one named in the Orchids of Asia Spa bust, and as it appears, a veritable "who's who" of Wall Street legends may soon be named.
Billionaire equity firm owner John Childs is one of several men accused of soliciting prostitution in connection with a Florida spa tied to an international human trafficking ring, police said Thursday.
Childs, who lives seasonally in Indian River Shores, is wanted on a solicitation of prostitution charge, according to a warrant for his arrest. He has not been arrested.
His first court date is listed as March 8, according to records.
Michael Avenatti, a well known attorney who said he recently provided a videotape of R. Kelly having sex with a minor to the Cook County state’s attorney’s office, applauded prosecutors for filing charges. It is unclear if the charges are related to the videotape the attorney provided.
“The day of reckoning has arrived” for R Kelly, Avenatti said in a tweet.
According to the Chronicle of Philanthropy, last year the country’s 50 most generous billionaires -- with a list that includes Amazon founder and world’s wealthiest man Jeff Bezos (who made the giving list for the first time), Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg -- gave only about half to charity of what they gave to good causes in 2017.
How much are we talking about, specifically? The country’s wealthiest gave $7.8 billion in disclosed donations in 2018. That may sound like a lot, but the nation’s top 50 mega-donors gave $14.7 billion to charity in 2017.
Tennis great Martina Navratilova is the target of LGBTQ scorn after dropping a truth bomb on transgender women. On Sunday, Navratilova wrote a controversial op-ed wherein the 18 time Grand Slam champion called transgender women who compete in women’s sports “cheats.”
“Letting men compete as women simply if they change their name and take hormones is unfair — no matter how those athletes may throw their weight around,” Navratilova wrote. This was too much for some folks. Immediately, Athlete Ally, a non-profit organization that advocates for LGBTQ inclusion and equality in sports, particularly transgender athletes, severed ties with Navratilova and released her from their board.
Iranian military leaders disclosed on Thursday that their intelligence operatives had infiltrated a U.S. Army Command Center and commandeered control of several American drones flying through Syria and Iraq.
Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps Aerospace Force, released information and photographic evidence that Iran claims as proof it was able to take control of several U.S. drones.
