Researchers Recreate 2,000-Year-Old Greek Astronomical Calculator. A “Tour de force of ancient Greek brilliance”

The UCL Antikythera Research Team struggle to solve the front of the Antikythera Mechanism—a fragmentary ancient Greek astronomical calculator—revealing a dazzling display of the ancient Greek Cosmos.

Published in Scientific Reports, the research team reveals the ancient Greek order of the Cosmos within a complex system of mechanical gears and brilliance.

Lead author and Professor, Tony Freeth, explained: “Ours is the first model that conforms to all the physical evidence and matches the descriptions in the scientific inscriptions engraved on the Mechanism itself… The Sun, Moon, and planets are displayed in an impressive tour de force of ancient Greek brilliance.”
