Federal Agents Raid Home and Seize Electronic Devices in Arizona’s Maricopa County During Voter-Data Theft Investigation

On Nov. 5, law enforcement officials served a search warrant and confiscated computers, hard drives and other storage devices during an investigation into voter data theft. An FBI spokesperson said they could not confirm nor deny any investigation and that the investigation and the breach remains under seal.

Maricopa County I.T. security staff reported the cyber-attack to authorities after they identified an intrusion by an unauthorized individual named Elliot Kerwin, who identifies himself on his LinkedIn profile as working in the I.T. field. Elliot seems to have stolen data from the Maricopa County Recorder’s Office. The search warrant issued was for records of computer intrusion or conspiracy to commit computer intrusion from Oct. 21 through early November.

According to the warrant, investigators were looking for records, information and communications related to the office’s:

• Login credentials and accounts.
• Voter registration records and information, including protected voters’ information.
• The transfer, sharing or dissemination of voter registration records and information, including protected voters’ information.
• Unauthorized access to the office’s website and computer systems.
• Attempts or threats to damage computer systems.
