January 23, 2019
The program has been described as “a map of deadbeat debtors,” revealing their financial information and exact location to nearby peers. The app brings snitching on your neighbors into the 21st century, making it simple and convenient to report those with outstanding financial obligations to the authorities.
According to ChinaDaily, a news service run by the Communist Party of China, the app will show if someone with bad credit is within 500 meters, making it easier for citizens to “whistle-blow on debtors capable of paying their debts.”
“It’s a part of our measures to enforce our rulings and create a socially credible environment,” a court spokesman explained.
The article features a screenshot of the app in which the offending parties are marked by adorable little emojis, which can be checked quickly to easily access the debtor’s information.
Birth of massive black holes in the early universe revealed…
January 23, 2019
The light released from around the first massive black holes in the universe is so intense that it is able to reach telescopes across the entire expanse of the universe. Incredibly, the light from the most distant black holes (or quasars) has been traveling to us for more than 13 billion light years. However, we do not know how these monster black holes formed.
New research led by researcher... provides a new and extremely promising avenue for solving this cosmic riddle. The team showed that when galaxies assemble extremely rapidly—and sometimes violently—that can lead to the formation of very massive black holes. In these rare galaxies, normal star formation is disrupted and black hole formation takes over.

D.C. City Council overrides mayor’s veto, will decriminalize Metro fare evasion because so many fare-jumpers are black…
January 23, 2019
“I’m sad that’s Metro’s losing money, but I’m more sad about what’s happening to black people.” - Council member Robert C. White Jr.
Metro had argued that it loses at least $25 million a year from passengers who fail to pay their bus fare and said that, combined with Metrorail fare evasion, the total lost probably exceeds $50 million annually — though there is no exact figure. But fare-jumping is not simply a financial concern, the agency argued. Similarly, Bowser’s opposition was not expressly in financial terms.
"We should not encourage lawlessness on Metro, which could exacerbate public safety concerns on our Metro and in our city,” Bowser wrote in a letter outlining her veto last week.
[...]
They pointed to a Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs report that concluded fare evasion enforcement was most prominent at stations that served a high proportion of black riders, suggesting targeted policing was at play. The statistic that punctuated the report: Between January 2016 and February 2018, Metro Transit Police stopped 30,000 people for suspected fare-jumping. Among those, 91 percent of fare evasion citations and summons were issued to African Americans.Bryan Singer has been trailed by accusations of sexual misconduct for 20 years. Here, his alleged victims tell their stories…
January 23, 2019
We spent 12 months investigating various lawsuits and allegations against Singer. In total, we spoke with more than 50 sources, including four men who have never before told their stories to reporters. A man we’ll call Eric told us that he was 17 in 1997 when he and Singer had sex at a party at the director’s house; another we’ll call Andy says he was only 15 that same year, when he and Singer had sex in a Beverly Hills mansion. Both men say Singer, who was then in his early 30s, knew they were under 18, the age of consent in California. (They asked The Atlantic to conceal their identity for fear of retaliation, and because they didn’t want certain details about their past made public.)

January 23, 2019
The White House on Tuesday announced the re-nomination of 51 federal judicial nominees left over from the previous Congress, kickstarting the administration's effort to install more conservative judges after GOP activists worried that such appointments had stalled.
Nine of the 51 appointments are for spots on prestigious and influential federal appellate benches, including two on the mostly liberal San Francisco-based 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, which President Trump has often derided as "disgraceful" and politically biased.
