Mark Kelly, a former Navy captain and retired astronaut who has become a strong advocate for gun control in the aftermath of a failed assassination attempt on his wife, former Rep. Gabby Giffords, announced a run for U.S. Senate in Arizona Tuesday.
Kelly, a Democrat, will run for the seat once held by the late Sen. John McCain, now held by GOP Sen. Martha McSally, who was appointed to the seat last year by Republican Gov. Doug Ducey.

Congressional negotiators on Monday night reached a bipartisan spending deal to avert another government shutdown — and it doesn’t earmark one dime for the construction of President Trump’s long-promised border wall with Mexico, said sources familiar with the matter.
The lawmakers wouldn’t divulge details of the deal, only saying it had been reached “in principle.”

A New Jersey woman accused of killing her toddler son told police she struck the boy because he wouldn’t eat or listen, according to a criminal complaint. Nakira Griner, who is charged with murder and other counts in the death of 23-month-old Daniel Griner Jr., is accused of burning and dismembering her son’s body.
Cumberland County prosecutors have said the Bridgeton woman initially reported that her son had been abducted Friday night. A response team began a search aided by city and state police, prosecutors, and bloodhounds from New Jersey State Park Police.
The child’s burned and dismembered remains were found around 3 a.m. Saturday, buried under a shed in the yard of Griner’s home.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said the 330 Central Americans were apprehended early Monday at the Antelope Wells port of entry, 122 miles (197 kilometers) west of El Paso, Texas.
This marks the second large group to be arrested near the port in less than a week. On Friday, agents arrested 290 Central Americans who entered the country illegally.

The condition can leave sufferers with walking difficulties and even paralysis because the spinal cord does not fully develop during pregnancy.
