Google employees who helped organize a global employee protest in November are now saying the company is punishing them for their activism.
Claire Stapleton, a marketing manager at YouTube, said she was demoted and told to take medical leave, even though she wasn’t ill. Meredith Whittaker, an artificial intelligence researcher, said she was reassigned and told to stop her well-known research on AI ethics. Both women detailed their experiences in an email to coworkers this week, which was shared with journalists at Wired and published Monday.

The utility calls the payments a short-term incentive plan, or STIP. It said in a statement that the plan "is forward-looking with a focus on achieving ambitious safety goals. The 2019 STIP will be awarded only if those goals are met," the company said.
Montali is overseeing the shareholder-owned utility's Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The Chapter 11 procedure enables a company to freeze its debts while reorganizing its finances. PG&E cited an estimated $50 billion in claims and lawsuits from devastating Northern California wildfires when it filed for Chapter 11 protection in January.

Veronica May Clark said in the lawsuit the state has denied her proper medications and is currently housing her at the Garner Correctional Institute in Newtown, which is for male inmates.
Clark was convicted of murdering the boyfriend of Clark’s former spouse in Waterbury in 2007. Clark was sentenced in 2009 to 75 years in prison. At the time, Clark identified as a man. She began her gender transition after arriving in prison.

Millions of Americans have taken the drugs, which are at the center of a widening recall being overseen by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and have been for decades used to treat high blood pressure, heart failure and other common conditions.
A lawyer involved in an effort to combine about 50 lawsuits, including at least 27 by patients who say they contracted cancer by using the recalled medicine, told a U.S. federal court he expects a surge of legal action. “My best estimate sitting here today is I expect that we will have approximately 2,000 personal-injury cases on file in the next two years”....

A New York man who formerly worked as an engineer for General Electric and a Chinese businessman have been charged by the Justice Department with economic espionage and theft of trade secrets... In a press release issued on Tuesday, Justice said that Xiaoqing Zheng, 56, of New York had been charged with conspiring to steal GE's trade secrets related to steam and gas turbines, while knowing that those stolen secrets would be used to benefit the Chinese government. Zhaoxi Zhang, 47, of Liaoning Province, China, was also charged Tuesday, according to the press release. The two face 14 charges in total related to Zheng's alleged efforts to steal data files related to "design models, engineering drawings, configuration files, and material specifications" from a GE plant in Schenectady and provide them to Zhang.
