The charges against Heaps became public Monday after he surrendered to law enforcement and later pleaded not guilty in a Los Angeles courtroom. His attorney said Heaps did nothing wrong and will fight the charges.
Report: Los Angeles Homelessness Crisis Worsens, 16,000 Living in Cars…
June 11, 2019
Roughly two years ago, the city introduced an alternative to homeless shelters: “Safe parking,” otherwise known as an area designated specifically for the homeless. It essentially gives them a “safe” spot to park so they can sleep in their vehicle during the night. Because the first lot was a such a “success,” they called for more. The expansion will ultimately add an additional 150 safe parking spots, bringing the total to around 300...

Molecular biologist Denis Rebrikov has told Nature he is considering implanting gene-edited embryos into women, possibly before the end of the year if he can get approval by then... The experiment will target the same gene, called CCR5,... but Rebrikov claims his technique will offer greater benefits, pose fewer risks and be more ethically justifiable and acceptable to the public. Rebrikov plans to disable the gene, which encodes a protein that allows HIV to enter cells, in embryos that will be implanted into HIV-positive mothers, reducing the risk of them passing on the virus to the baby in uter...

June 11, 2019
Both sides said the settlement represented a win. “Infowars had said it planned to ‘free Pepe once and for all,’ but it backed down rather than face trial and lose,” Furie’s pro bono counsel, Louis Tompros, said in a statement. Last month, a judge declined to toss the lawsuit, while also reportedly limiting the potential jury award to about $14,000.
Furie’s attorneys said the artist would provide $1,000 of the $15,000 settlement to the amphibian conservation group Save the Frogs! Under the settlement, Infowars will also agree to destroy any remaining posters with Pepe and to not use the image again.

Scientists have discovered a mysterious gravitational anomaly at the south pole of the moon where gravity appears to be stronger…
June 11, 2019
Researchers suspect it may be caused by a mass of metal which originated from deep space being buried beneath the moon's surface and weighing it down... "Imagine taking a pile of metal five times larger than the Big Island of Hawaii and burying it underground," said the study's lead author Dr Peter James. "That's roughly how much unexpected mass we detected," Dr James said... "One of the explanations of this extra mass is that the metal from the asteroid that formed this crater is still embedded in the moon's mantle."...

A new study finds legal medical marijuana doesn’t reduce opioid overdoses, after all…
June 11, 2019
Both researchers agree that these conflicting findings cry out for more research on medical marijuana. Because the drug is illegal, it’s been hard for scientists to carefully study its effects on patients in a rigorous way, which is why they must rely on natural experiments such as the staggered implementation of cannabis laws. More studies would help scientists understand exactly how, if at all, cannabis can help with chronic pain and help people avoid addictive painkillers...

actress testifies she was lured into ‘sex cult’ through classes…
June 11, 2019
An actress testified Monday that "Smallville" star Allison Mack pulled her deeper into the activities of the cult-like group Nxivm, where she eventually became a "slave" in the organization's secret sex society and was blackmailed into staying silent... Her ex-boyfriend... suggested she take a program of courses called "The Source."... among many classes Nxivm offered. She liked that the courses combined acting and psychology... She said her ex-boyfriend told her about successful and famous people involved Nxivm... Nicole said, she was uncomfortable about some aspects of Nxivm. Students and instructors wore different colored sashes to signify their ranks, she said, and would bow when entering and leaving a room. Group members idolized Raniere, calling him the smartest man in the world...
In order to hear anything about the organization, Nicole would need to give "collateral" or damaging information that would hurt her family and those closest to her... "There were so many things that were added on later once you were, like, sealed into this situation," she testified...
Nicole said she remembers being led into a small cabin with only a table. Raniere asked her to take off her clothes again, and tied her wrists and ankles to the table corners. Then, she felt somebody begin to perform oral sex on her... "I realized there was another person in the room," she testified.
She later found out that it was a woman who performed oral sex on her...Some already know the details about this cult, but this testimony gives an insider look at how they operated.

June 11, 2019
The Journal quoted the person as saying “There was a nexus” between the CIA and Kim Jong Nam. “Several former U.S. officials said the half brother, who had lived outside of North Korea for many years and had no known power base in Pyongyang, was unlikely to be able to provide details of the secretive country’s inner workings,” the Journal said. The former officials also said Kim Jong Nam had been almost certainly in contact with security services of other countries, particularly China’s, the Journal said.
