    August 30, 2019

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey’s Twitter account was seemingly hacked on Friday afternoon by a group that calls themselves the “Chuckle Gang.” Under the hack, Dorsey’s account tweeted out racist terms and linked to a Discord account seemingly used by the hackers. It appears to be the same group who attacked a number of YouTube creators and influencers last week on Twitter, including beauty vlogger James Charles, Shane Dawson, and comedian King Bach.

    August 30, 2019

A team of Peruvian archaeologists found the skeletal remains of 250 children and 40 warriors sacrificed between the 13th and 15th centuries in Huanchaco district, said Feren Castillo, director of the excavation project... Castillo explained these people are believed to be sacrificed in a Chimu ritual for deities in order to appease the wrath of nature, due to El Niño phenomenon-related natural catastrophes. Preliminary investigations revealed that the remains belonged to sacrificed individuals, due to the marks found in their bodies and the cuts on both sides of the thorax.

  • New Mexico preparing to seize land at Epstein ranch…

    August 30, 2019

New Mexico officials are in the process of canceling state land leases for the Zorro Ranch owned by accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, the state's land commissioner told Fox News on Friday. The ranch, which is nearly 10,000 acres, is a mix of private and state-owned lands. New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas found Epstein, who killed himself while in federal custody awaiting trial on sex crimes charges, improperly leased the land from the state. A cancelation on that sale is in the works... Taking back parcels of state-owned land could make it easier to search the estate – the only one of Epstein properties that has not yet been raided by authorities. Some of Epstein’s accusers have said they were assaulted at the ranch.

  • CDC: Mumps outbreak in detention centers exposed almost 900 migrants…

    August 30, 2019

The CDC said Friday that a total of 898 confirmed and probable mumps cases were reported among adult migrants detained in 57 of all 315 facilities housing Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainees across 19 states between Sept. 1, 2018 and Aug. 22, 2019. Almost half of all the mumps cases, almost 400, were reported in facilities in Texas. According to the CDC, the outbreak began in October and it involved five cases in which migrants had been transferred between two facilities within the state. Only four of the facilities exposed to mumps are run by ICE. Another 34 facilities are run by private companies who contract with ICE, while 19 are county jails that house detained migrants.

  • Panera is losing nearly 100% of its workers every year as fast-food turnover crisis worsens…

    August 30, 2019

If you think it sounds like a mathematical impossibility for a company to lose more than 100% of its workers every year, you've never worked in the fast-food industry. At fast-food restaurants, losing 100% of employees — and then losing still more of the employees hired to replace those workers — is a common, and worsening, labor problem... The official Bureau of Labor Statistics turnover rate for the restaurant sector was 81.9% for the 2015–2017 period, but industry estimates are much higher, reaching 150%, and the problem has gotten worse in recent years...
The turnover cost estimates have kept going up. The cost per employee now is estimated by the National Restaurant Association at $2,000 per employee... Restaurants are pressured by rising costs and the ability to pass that on to consumers. The average cost of a restaurant meal increased 2.4% in the last 12 months, according to NPD data, more than the rate of inflation and cost of a grocery basket, and the rising cost puts pressure on restaurant operators... "Sooner or later these jobs will disappear. There is no reason a robot can't serve," Pizam said. "In the future, whether 20, 30 or 50 years, only the very top of the restaurant industry will have human beings. Prepared or not, we will see it."

  • Trump administration ends relief program for immigrants with medical issues…

    August 30, 2019

The Trump administration has started denying pleas by non-citizens who are trying to extend their time in the U.S. in order to treat severe medical conditions. Letters issued by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, and obtained by ABC News, tell those applying for medical relief that agency offices, "no longer consider deferred action requests," except for members of the military... The letters warn that if they don't leave the within 33 days, it could make them ineligible to return to the U.S...
USCIS, the agency in charge of legal immigration and processing visas, told ABC News that "this does not mean the end of deferred action" but rather that any requests must be submitted to a different agency, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which is the department in charge of deportations. But the enforcement agency wasn't aware of the policy change until reports surfaced in the press, according to an ICE official. The agency doesn't have a process to accept the medical deferment applications that were previously reviewed by USCIS, the official said.
