August 24, 2019
In an interview with the Reuters news agency, Sarah Ketchen Lipson of Boston University’s School of Public Health revealed that analysis of 2015-2017 Healthy Minds Study data showed “gender minority” students are four times as likely to suffer mental health disorders as their so-called “cisgender” counterparts — “cisgender” being the fashionable term for people whose gender identity matches their biological sex. “The traditional college years coincide with the onset of about 75 per cent of mental illnesses, and students are experiencing newfound autonomy living on their own with new social environments, new health behaviours and different forms of stress,” explained the academic.
Florida man who invoked ‘stand your ground’ defense in shooting of unarmed man, found guilty of manslaughter…
August 24, 2019
A Florida man who told detectives he had a “pet peeve” about illegal parking in handicapped spots was convicted late Friday of manslaughter for the fatal shooting of an unarmed black man outside a convenience store. Six jurors deliberated for six hours in Clearwater before convicting Michael Drejka for the July 19, 2018, death of Markeis McGlockton. Drejka, who could get 30 years... was ordered held without bond until his sentencing in October... The verdict came about a half-hour after jurors sent out a note saying they were confused by the state’s self-defense law. Circuit Judge Joseph Bulone told them all he could do is reread it for them. The lengthy statute generally says a shooting is justified if a reasonable person under those circumstances would believe they are in danger of death or great bodily harm. But it also says the shooter could not have instigated the altercation.

Summer Worden, a former Air Force intelligence officer living in Kansas, has been in the midst of a bitter separation and parenting dispute for much of the past year. So she was surprised when she noticed that her estranged spouse still seemed to know things about her spending. Had she bought a car? How could she afford that? Ms. Worden put her intelligence background to work, asking her bank about the locations of computers that had recently accessed her bank account using her login credentials. The bank got back to her with an answer: One was a computer network registered to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Ms. Worden’s spouse, Anne McClain, was a decorated NASA astronaut on a six-month mission aboard the International Space Station.

Brandon B. Porter, a former doctor at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany, violated 40 state and federal regulations, according to an investigation against him by the New York Department of Health. The department's investigation into Porter found that the doctor not only conducted unlicensed "human subject research," but that he failed to obtain proper consent from people or keep records from his supposed studies.
Between 2010 and 2017, Porter allegedly performed unsanctioned neurological research on more than 200 "subjects" to study psychological responses to certain stimuli as part of NXIVM's studies into Tourette's syndrome, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, and "Executive Success Program" for self-betterment, according to the department's investigation.

For Friday’s “Hong Kong Way” demonstration, organisers had called for people to gather in single file along routes that roughly matched subway lines, snaking nearly 30 miles (50km) through Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories.

Unlike other protests that have snarled up the city, demonstrators stood in single file along pavements. The chain broke and formed again at road junctions to allow traffic through. After the protest ended at 9pm local time, they melted back into the streets, following one of the unofficial mottos of the movement: “Be like water.”...New Jersey Awarded $3.8 Million in Financial Aid to Illegal Aliens…

August 23, 2019
Amazon has removed hundreds of toxic and unsafe products from its site after a Wall Street Journal report found thousands of listings from third-party sellers don’t comply with federal safety standards. Thousands of problematic products remain. More than 4,000 items for sale on Amazon have been declared unsafe by federal agencies, including 2,000 listings for children’s toys and medications. The Journal also identified 157 items Amazon had already banned still listed on the site, and one product it tested had lead levels that exceed federal limits.
