Abstract

Bacterial speciation is a fundamental evolutionary process characterized by diverging genotypic and phenotypic properties. However, the selective forces that affect genetic adaptations and how they relate to the biological changes that underpin the formation of a new bacterial species remain poorly understood. Here, we show that the spore-forming, healthcare-associated enteropathogen Clostridium difficile is actively undergoing speciation. Through large-scale genomic analysis of 906 strains, we demonstrate that the ongoing speciation process is linked to positive selection on core genes in the newly forming species that are involved in sporulation and the metabolism of simple dietary sugars. Functional validation shows that the new C. difficile produces spores that are more resistant and have increased sporulation and host colonization capacity when glucose or fructose is available for metabolism. Thus, we report the formation of an emerging C. difficile species, selected for metabolizing simple dietary sugars and producing high levels of resistant spores, that is adapted for healthcare-mediated transmission.

llinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D) signed a bill into law on Friday that mandates all public schools in the state to teach "LGBT history" to students, emphasizing the "roles and contributions" of gays and transgenders in the history of Illinois and the United States. The law goes into effect on July 1, 2020.

The law amends the school code in Illinois. Specifically, it mandates that "the textbooks authorized to be purchased must include the roles and contributions of all people protected under the Illinois Human Rights Act and must be non-discriminatory as to any of the characteristics under the Act."

On Saturday, anti-ICE protesters shut down parts of New York City's West Side Highway. On Sunday, demonstrators shouted "never again" and "close the camps" in front of the midtown location of Amazon Books. The demonstration was organized by local Jewish leaders, who say Amazon provides technology that helps ICE make detentions... Protest leaders say Amazon has contracts with the Department of Homeland Security. Previous reports have said Amazon Web Services, the company's cloud computing service, hosts databases for the federal government that enable authorities to track immigrants. CBS News has reached out to Amazon for more information.

CNN reported that a summary of the draft stated that the White House “has received more than 15,000 anecdotal complaints of social media platforms censoring American political discourse.” The Trump administration is preparing to share some of these complaints with the FTC. CNN reported on August 9 that the order is currently titled “Protecting Americans from Online Censorship.”

The complaints were gathered from the Trump administration’s website which asked for users to report their instances of bias at the hands of social media companies like Facebook and Google. In the spirit of this, the FTC will be asked by the administration to open a “public complaint docket” for these complaints.
