• Colonel W. Shane Cohen of the Air Force announced on Friday that the trial is set for January 11, 2021
• The case will take place at Camp Justice at Guantánamo Bay in Cuba
• Date announcement was included in a 10-page trial scheduling order that also said that prosecutors had until October 1 to get material to defense teams
• Cohen's announcement marks the first time that a trial judge in the case actually established a date
• Prosecutors had tried to get the ball rolling with two previous judges after the 2012 arraignment of the five men

Powell points out that the prosecutors have recently produced exculpatory evidence to the defense team but declined to call it “exculpatory.” She makes an argument for why the evidence should be considered Brady (exculpatory) material in a sealed filing. As a result, Powell demands in the filing that the defense team examine information even if the prosecutors deem it inculpatory.
According to Powell, the kind of conduct she is accusing the prosecutors of is pervasive in the DOJ. By referencing a ruling in a separate case, she suggests that the remedy for such misconduct should be for the court to find the prosecutors in contempt and for the indictment to be dismissed...

Last week, the Washington Post reported that the White House had been briefed on a plan to create an agency called HARPA, a healthcare counterpart to the Pentagon’s research and development arm DARPA. Among other initiatives, this new agency would reportedly collect volunteer data from a suite of smart devices, including Apple Watches, Fitbits, Amazon Echos, and Google Homes in order to identify “neurobehavioral signs” of “someone headed toward a violent explosive act.” The project would then use artificial intelligence to create a “sensor suite” to flag mental changes that make violence more likely.
According to the Post, the HARPA proposal was discussed with senior White House officials as early as June 2017, but has “gained momentum” after the mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio...

The Italian star passed away Friday after drowning in his native Sardinia, The Associated Press reported. He lived in Los Angeles, but had been vacationing in Sardinia when he fell ill while swimming. He was pronounced dead at a hospital in the city of Olbia...

There is no tsunami danger from this earthquake, according to the Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer. The earthquake struck just after 8:30 p.m. about 100 miles northwest of Juneau, in a remote corner of Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, according to the Alaska Earthquake Center. A 3.8 magnitude earthquake struck nearby two days ago, according to the Alaska Earthquake Center data.

The operation, which lasted two and a half years, used a small collection of hacked websites to deliver malware on to the iPhones of visitors. Users were compromised simply by visiting the sites: no interaction was necessary, and some of the methods used by the hackers affected even fully up-to-date phones. Once hacked, the user’s deepest secrets were exposed to the attackers. Their location was uploaded every minute; their device’s keychain, containing all their passwords, was uploaded, as were their chat histories on popular apps including WhatsApp, Telegram and iMessage, their address book, and their Gmail database.

The one silver lining is that the implant was not persistent: when the phone was restarted, it was cleared from memory unless the user revisited a compromised site. However, according to Ian Beer, a security researcher at Google: “Given the breadth of information stolen, the attackers may nevertheless be able to maintain persistent access to various accounts and services by using the stolen authentication tokens from the keychain, even after they lose access to the device.”
