The letter, signed by the chief executives of Uber, Levi Strauss & Co., Twitter and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., among other companies, urges Congress to expand background checks and "red flag" laws, legislation that would enable law enforcement to temporarily take guns away from people deemed a danger to themselves or others... The CEOs called on the Republican-controlled Senate to follow the House of Representatives' lead in passing a measure updating the background check system that Congress established 25 years ago. The bill, passed in the Democratic-controlled House in February, would require federal background checks for all firearms sales and transfers.
GM Recalls 3.4M Pickups, Large SUVs for Brake Issue…
September 12, 2019
General Motors is recalling more than 3.45 million of its large SUVs and trucks, including the 2015 to 2017 Cadillac Escalade, 2014 to 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, as well as 2015 to 2018 Chevrolet Suburban, Chevrolet Tahoe, and GMC Yukon for a braking issue, according to federal records. Specifically, the amount of vacuum created by the vacuum pump may decrease over time. This, in turn, means the brake assist decreases, increasing the braking effort and extending the distance required to stop the vehicle, which increases the likelihood of a collision.
Update: EPA announces repeal of controversial water regulation from Obama era…
September 12, 2019
Acting EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler announced the decision at an event in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, following years of controversy surrounding the issue. “Today’s Step 1 action fulfills a key promise of President Trump and sets the stage for Step 2 – a new WOTUS definition that will provide greater regulatory certainty for farmers, landowners, home builders, and developers nationwide," Wheeler said, according to the EPA... While it's unclear exactly what the new rule will say, environmental groups have panned the idea as a threat to the nation's waterways. When the EPA announced in December that it would publish the new rule, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., warned that it would pollute drinking water.
Israel accused of planting mysterious spy devices near the White House
September 12, 2019
The U.S. government concluded... that Israel was most likely behind the placement of cellphone surveillance devices that were found near the White House and other sensitive locations around Washington... The miniature surveillance devices, colloquially known as “StingRays,” mimic regular cell towers to fool cellphones into giving them their locations and identity information... they also can capture the contents of calls and data use.
[...]
Based on a detailed forensic analysis, the FBI and other agencies working on the case felt confident that Israeli agents had placed the devices... “It was pretty clear that the Israelis were responsible,”... Benjamin Netanyahu denied that Israel was behind the devices. "We have a directive, I have a directive: No intelligence work in the United States, no spies,".. But former officials with deep experience dealing with intelligence matters scoff at the Israeli claim... “The Israelis are pretty aggressive” in their intelligence gathering operations... “They’re all about protecting the security of the Israeli state and they do whatever they feel they have to to achieve that objective.”...Documents Released By The US Marshals Service Have Revealed Jeffrey Epstein investigations went deeper than previously thought…

As a result of his sex offender status, Epstein was required to report his international travel under a 2016 law known as International Megan's Law. The US Attorney's Office for the SDNY, however, suspected that Epstein hadn't complied, and referred the matter to the Marshals Service as early as January 2019... By March, the Marshals Service received notification from the US Virgin Islands Sex Offender Registry that Epstein was set to travel to France that month, and it soon discovered that a public website that tracks flight activity showed Epstein travelled to Austria and Monaco on the same trip without notifying authorities, the documents show...
An air traffic controller, who told the official she had seen Epstein get off his plane on one occasion with two girls who appeared to be 11 and 12 years old and at another time with a girl who looked between 16 and 18 years old. Both occasions, she said, were during the second half of 2018, well after the period covered by the charges against him in the New York indictment, which alleged crimes between 2002 and 2005...
Days after the call with the air traffic controller, a Marshals Service inspector travelled to the US Virgin Islands and met with the US Attorney's office. The inspector asked prosecutors to submit a request... to the countries the Marshals Service suspected Epstein had travelled to without notification. The inspector later submitted a search warrant to prosecutors for Epstein's phone number that he listed for international travel. Days before Epstein died, the Marshals Service received information from the Federal Aviation Administration showing that Epstein's jet had travelled to "numerous more countries" than officials had previously known, according to the documents. On August 19, the Marshals Service filed another report, this time noting Epstein's death. "As such, the search warrant for Epstein's phone was cancelled, the MLAT requests for all countries were cancelled, and all investigative activities were cancelled," it said.

One of the new species can discharge up to 860 volts, the strongest of any known animal.

Other groups are currently studying the possibility of using the results of research on electric eels to analyze the enzymes produced by their electric organs to determine their applicability in medication for neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease or as a model to develop batteries for prosthetics and sensors implanted in humans...Hillary Clinton’s emails are on display at an art exhibit in Venice. The state Assembly on Monday voted 72-0 to pass the bill, which is championed by many athletes in the collegiate and professional ranks, such as Lebron James. The state Senate passed the measure Wednesday 39-0.
