Huge, mysterious ‘bubbles’ discovered at the heart of the Milky Way…
September 17, 2019
The mysterious structures, joined together in an hourglass-like shape and spewing radio waves, are thought to be the remnants of a vast cosmic explosion that occurred in our galaxy some 7 million years ago. The radio-emitting bubbles, described in a paper published Sept. 11 in the journal Nature, measure about 1,200 light-years across and are in an active region near the supermassive black hole at the heart of the Milky Way. Farhad Yusef-Zadeh, a physicist at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, and a member of the international team of scientists behind the discovery, likened this region to a bustling metropolis. By comparison, he said, our solar system lies in a “more rural area” with less activity, about 25,000 light-years from the galactic center on one of the Milky Way’s spiral arms.

Jeffrey Epstein accusers cannot recoup damages over lenient plea deal: U.S. judge…
September 17, 2019
A group of women who said Jeffrey Epstein sexually abused them are not entitled to money damages from the United States even though federal prosecutors kept them in the dark about the financier’s lenient non-prosecution agreement more than a decade ago, a Florida judge ruled on Monday. U.S. District Judge Kenneth Marra in West Palm Beach also rejected the women’s bid to void the non-prosecution agreement, which had barred prosecutions of Epstein and some alleged accomplices, saying Epstein’s death last month made the issue moot. Marra also denied a request for attorneys’ fees.
A Shadowy Industry Group Shapes Food Policy Around the World…
September 17, 2019
When the Indian government bowed to powerful food companies last year and postponed its decision to put red warning labels on unhealthy packaged food, officials also sought to placate critics of the delay by creating an expert panel to review the proposed labeling system, which would have gone far beyond what other countries have done in the battle to combat soaring obesity rates.
But the man chosen to head the three-person committee, Dr. Boindala Sesikeran, a veteran nutritionist and former adviser to Nestle, only further enraged health advocates. That’s because Dr. Sesikeran is a trustee of the International Life Sciences Institute, an American nonprofit with an innocuous sounding name that has been quietly infiltrating government health and nutrition bodies around the world. Created four decades ago by a top Coca-Cola executive, the institute now has branches in 17 countries. It is almost entirely funded by Goliaths of the agribusiness, food and pharmaceutical industries.EU seeks plane subsidy deal, but U.S. not talking…

- The European Union is urging the United States to hold off trade sanctions and seek an agreement on aircraft industry subsidies, but Washington has shown no sign it wants to talk, EU trade chief Cecilia Malmstrom said on Monday. The World Trade Organization has approved a U.S. request to impose tariffs on European goods, according to people familiar with the case, part of a 15-year dispute over subsidies for U.S. planemaker Boeing (BA.N) and European rival Airbus (AIR.PA). The Geneva-based body is set to announce the scope of the sanctions in the week starting Sept. 30. It is also expected to clear the European Union to take action against U.S. imports early next year.
