Shortly after 12:30 p.m., at least eight men left the Senate Democratic offices carrying two cardboard boxes, two brown bags labeled “evidence” and what appeared to be a desktop computer, wrapped in plastic. They loaded everything into two SUVs. An FBI spokesman confirmed that agents were at the capitol Tuesday conducting “authorized law enforcement activity,” but declined to comment further. The spokesman had no immediate comment when asked about the search of Sandoval’s Cicero office.

500 Scientists Write U.N.: ‘There Is No Climate Emergency’…
September 24, 2019
“Climate science should be less political, while climate policies should be more scientific,” the declaration states. “Scientists should openly address the uncertainties and exaggerations in their predictions of global warming, while politicians should dispassionately count the real benefits as well as the imagined costs of adaptation to global warming, and the real costs as well as the imagined benefits of mitigation.” The scientists underscored the importance of not rushing into enormously expensive climate action before fully ascertaining the facts.

September 24, 2019
The olive branch to hackers marks a huge about-face for the industry, which last week asked for feedback from researchers and companies about the best ways to let outsiders vet their security. They've long argued that researchers, by exposing security flaws, could give a roadmap to foreign hackers intent on compromising the 2020 contest. Now they're saying the threat of Russian hacking and disinformation is too severe for the security of election systems to be treated as a private matter to be managed behind closed doors...

Alan Dershowitz asks judge to dismiss defamation case against him from Virginia Giuffre …
September 24, 2019
The first salvos in a federal court case pitting two of the nations most powerful lawyers against each other were heard Tuesday in New York, as famed lawyer Alan Dershowitz argued that his Twitter attacks against a woman accusing him of sexual abuse are protected free speech.
The defamation case promises to provide lurid new details about Jeffrey Epstein’s sex trafficking case, including whether other powerful men were involved in procuring young women from Epstein for sex. Among the names thrown out at the hearing Tuesday was Leslie Wexner, owner of Victoria’s Secret, whom Dershowitz said will be called as a witness should the case go to trial.
German consumer group finds that using reusable bamboo coffee cups can be bad for your health…
September 24, 2019
Testing 12 different bamboo cup brands, Stiftung Warentest found that most released ‘very high’ amounts of melamine and formaldehyde after contact with a hot drink. At first glance, food and beverage containers made from bamboo seem like a good choice for environmentally friendly consumers. Bamboo is the fastest-growing plant on the planet, so there’s no shortage of sustainable material. Plus, bamboo containers are reusable and can, therefore, replace the disposable containers used by coffee shops and other food and beverage outlets. According to data cited by German consumer organisation Stiftung Warentest foundation, disposable coffee cups create 40,000 metric tons of waste each year in Germany alone. However, a recent test by the consumer group, that investigates and compares goods on the German market, has shown that by switching to a bamboo cup you might be risking your health in the process.
Navy launches probe after spate of suicides on US warships…
September 24, 2019
Federal agents are probing the recent spate of suicides committed by sailors assigned to the USS George H.W. Bush — including a fourth case in July, according to a report. Authorities began investigating the suicide of Machinist’s Mate 3rd Class Robert John Bartulewicz III in July, but federal agents launched a new probe after three other sailors from the same aircraft carrier killed themselves last week, the Navy Times reported... Navy officials rejected suggestions that the cases point to an “epidemic,” the Navy Times reported. “The sailors did not serve in the same departments, and there does not appear to be a connection between their deaths,” Cmdr. Jennifer Cragg told the outlet.
San Francisco homeless crisis prompts neighborhood to put boulders on sidewalk to deter campers…
September 24, 2019
A residential side street in San Francisco now resembles a scene out of the rocky West after a group of neighbors banded together to place about two dozen boulders along the sidewalk to try and deter homeless people from camping out amid the city's ongoing crisis. Neighbors along Clinton Park in the city's Mission Dolores neighborhood said the rocks are meant to keep drug users from having a space to shoot up as they camp out overnight. "They'll shoot up and stay overnight," neighbor David Smith-Tan told KTVU. "A bunch of my neighbors, we all chipped in a few hundred dollars and I guess this is what they came up with."

Researchers discover hidden continent Greater Adria in the Mediterranean…
September 24, 2019
Dubbed "Greater Adria" by its founders at Utrecht University in the Netherlands, the missing piece of continental crust seemingly separated from North Africa and lodged itself under Southern Europe. While most of the continent is underwater, much of the land mass's sedimentary pieces were scraped off during its great migration. Those scrapings now make up European mountain belts, including parts of the Alps, Greece and Turkey.
