TÜRKİYE HALK BANKASI A.S., a/k/a “Halkbank,” was charged today in a six-count Indictment with fraud, money laundering, and sanctions offenses related to the bank’s participation in a multibillion-dollar scheme to evade U.S. sanctions on Iran. The case is assigned to United States District Judge Richard M. Berman.
U.S. Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman stated: “The facts that emerged at the full, fair, and public trial of Halkbank’s deputy general manager, which culminated in a jury’s January 2018 guilty verdict against him, illustrated senior Halkbank management’s participation in this brazen scheme to circumvent our nation’s Iran sanctions regime. As alleged in today’s indictment, Halkbank’s systemic participation in the illicit movement of billions of dollars’ worth of Iranian oil revenue was designed and executed by senior bank officials. The bank’s audacious conduct was supported and protected by high-ranking Turkish government officials, some of whom received millions of dollars in bribes to promote and protect the scheme. Halkbank will now have to answer for its conduct in an American court.” ...
“That’s a reference to your son being hired right out of law school by a big company here in Delaware that is in the credit card business, MBNA. He got about $100,000 a year, as I recall. You received $214,000 in campaign contributions from the company and from its employees,” Brokaw said. “At the same time, you were fighting for a bankruptcy bill that MBNA really wanted to get passed through the Senate, making it much tougher for everyone to file bankruptcy.”
McKesson Corp., AmerisourceBergen Corp. and Cardinal Health would collectively pay the $18 billion over 18 years as part of the deal, the WSJ reported. OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma reached a tentative agreement last month to settle some 2,000 opioid lawsuits filed by local governments, Native American tribes and states...
Hariri also vowed those behind it would bay "pay a heavy price". The Lebanese Army is said to be spearheading response efforts alongside over one hundred firefighters and additional volunteers to put the fires out, fueled by an especially dry season. Many homes in the Chouf mountains of densely populated central Lebanon were gutted by the forest fires...
Tuesday's order, a response to lawsuits by an association of medical professionals filed soon after the mandate went into effect, confirms two prior rulings against the regulation. The mandate was implemented by the Department of Health and Human Services in 2016, toward the end of the Obama administration, and required doctors to perform gender-transition procedures on any patient referred to them by a mental health professional. Doctors who refused to do the procedures because of moral objections risked losing their job.
The discovery was made after the 58-year-old man's 25-year-old son walked from the farm to a pub in Ruinerwold, where he was "completely confused" and police were called, RTV Drenthe reported. The owner of the pub, Chris Westerbeek, told Dagblad van het Noorden the 25-year-old looked "unkempt" with long hair and said he "needed help and had never been to school"... The father and the five children, all between the ages of 16 and 25, lived in the space and had no contact with the outside world, according to the television station. All of the man's children reportedly had no idea there were other humans out in the world... The farm had a "huge" vegetable garden and many sheds, but was described as rather "messy," according to the newspaper. RTV reported the family was completely self-sufficient, living off the vegetable garden and a goat.
Agents working in Temecula stopped a 2009 Ford Escape last Wednesday and made contact with a 54-year-old male U.S. citizen. Authorities noticed the headrests of the backseats were apparently tampered with and not of factory stock. Agents discovered two metal boxes concealed in the headrests containing 12 plastic-wrapped packages. Nine of the bags were determined to hold 22 pounds of fentanyl and three others held 2.64 pounds of cocaine. The combined value of the fentanyl and cocaine was determined to have an estimated street worth of $236,400, according to a federal media release.
A federal grand jury in New York has issued a subpoena to former Texas congressman Pete Sessions seeking records and other information on his interactions with President Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudolph W. Giuliani, and two Giuliani associates charged last week with a scheme to funnel foreign money to U.S. politicians, according to two people familiar with the investigation. The subpoena seeks records about Sessions’s dealings with Giuliani and two business associates, Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman, who before their arrest had been helping Giuliani investigate Democratic presidential candidate and former vice president Joe Biden.

Robert Shapiro, 62, was issued a 25 year sentence on Tuesday in Miami federal court after previously pleading guilty to wire fraud and tax evasion. Through his now-defunct investment firm, Woodbridge Group of Companies, Shapiro masterminded the scheme, swindling 7,000 investors out $470 million. During the five year ploy, Shapiro promised investors – most of them elderly – that their cash would be used to build and buy luxury properties for high returns. Instead, Shapiro bought the properties himself through a web of legal entities to obscure ownership, compiling hundreds of millions in real estate value. Under the confines of a classic Ponzi scheme arrangement, Shapiro’s firm paid off old investors using funds donated by new ones. His victims included retired doctors, teachers and at least one high-profile investor — ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos...
A new 33-patient case study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine provides some of the strongest proof yet that exposure to asbestos-tainted talcum powder may cause malignant mesothelioma, a rare and deadly cancer that affects tissues lining internal organs. This isn’t only an important scientific discovery—it could also give new ammunition to plaintiffs in the thousands of cases brought against brands selling talcum-powder-based products alleged to cause cancer, like Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder.
... Roh allegedly had machines to manufacture AR-15s in a warehouse outside Los Angeles. Customers could come to the warehouse and allegedly build their own rifles “for about $1,000.” Roh allegedly maintained his business, even after ATF officials warned him ‘in person…that he was breaking the law.” Roh was eventually indicted, only to have federal authorities drop charges after prosecutors grew worried that a ruling in the case would be detrimental to the larger gun control system. They specifically worried the 1968 Gun Control Act could be endangered and that a trial might “seriously undermine the ATF’s ability to trace and regulate firearms nationwide.”
