Last American Slave Ship Wreckage Found In Alabama…
May 23, 2019
The wreck of the last ship known to bring enslaved people from Africa to the United States has been located by researchers off the northern Gulf Coast, the Alabama Historical Commission said Wednesday. Remains of the Gulf schooner Clotilda were identified and verified along the Mobile River, near 12 Mile Island and just north of the Mobile Bay delta... The Clotilda, captained by shipbuilder William Foster, sailed into Mobile Bay with 110 African men, women, and children and young adults... The ship illegally transported the people from Benin in Africa to Mobile from February to July of 1860. The Clotilda was then taken into delta waters north of the port and burned to avoid detection.
