The Seattle Times reported that the unidentified man appeared outside of the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma with a rifle and threw incendiary devices at both the facility and nearby propane tanks, at one point setting a vehicle on fire. Officers responded to the incident around 4 a.m. and called out to the man before shots were fired. It was not clear how many shots were fired or whether the man fired at police.
... The four officers involved were placed on administrative leave in accordance with the department's policy. None of them were injured. ICE said in a statement that no employees "were harmed nor involved in this tragic incident."
Addressing military personnel a day before the Bastille Day parade, Macron said the new military doctrine setting up a space command would strengthen protection of French satellites. He said the investment involved had yet to determined.
"To give substance to this doctrine and ensure the development and reinforcement of our space capabilities, a space command will be created next September in the air force," Macron said, adding that it would later become the Space and Air Force.
Recently NASA has released a dazzling video map of all the exoplanets it has ever spotted, including those from dedicated world-hunting crafts Kepler and TESS.
The artist Matt Russo created the animation and scored by the musician Andrew Santaguida, who both works with a science-art outreach project called System Sound. The short film was published on YouTube on Sunday and described on Wednesday by NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) site.

Hundreds of protesters had gathered in Aurora, Colo., outside the federal facility that holds illegal immigrants, to protest ICE raids scheduled to begin Sunday in Denver and other major U.S. cities, FOX 31 Denver reported... The protest, part of a network of #LightsForLiberty events, also dubbed the “March to Close Concentration Camps,” called for detention centers at the U.S.-Mexico border to be closed and for all immigrants being held in those locations to be granted entry to the U.S., according to the event’s Facebook page.

Nearly 50,000 people are without power as Tropical Storm Barry nears landfall on Louisiana's south-central coast.
According to Entergy Louisiana's outages map, more than 45,800 people had been affected by power outages as of 4:11 a.m. Saturday. Nearly a fourth of those outages were in coastal Terrebonne Parish. A number of other southern parishes were affected, including Jefferson Parish outside of New Orleans.
The money — $250,000 in one case and $100,000 in the other — was secretly funneled to the potential witnesses, identified in the documents as “possible co-conspirator[s],’’ at around the same time the Miami Herald unleashed a series of exposés about the perverted financier, the feds said.
The person who was wired the $250,000 was identified as “one of the defendant’s employees.” “Neither of these payments appears to be recurring or repeating during the approximately five years of bank records available to the government,’’ the documents said.
Several news accounts explained it as possibly a rental to try and buy, something most home-buyers don't get to do. Whether she actually paid is also a big question mark, and if so, whether she paid market value (which would have cost more than a fancy hotel) or received her night there a "gift," which presents its own ethics problems... If they're in the market to buy that, they've got a lot more money than the press is reporting. We know they're loaded. But not that loaded. Not Louis XIV loaded, which is about the range for this sort of place. Or is it a sweetheart deal in the works we're talking about? Maybe they'll end up buying it for "a dollar." Don't know yet, but neither possibility makes them look good...
Major hotel chains have promised to not aid U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement during their planned raids of illegal immigrants this weekend... Marriott, another major hotel chain, also vowed to not allow any of their hotels to be used to detain illegal immigrants.... Colin Kaepernick’s views on America and the flag are fringe opinions, not shared by any of us … especially the African Americans who marched against segregation with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. #nike#BetsyRossFlag
“It has been clear for a long time that Colin Kaepernick’s views represent hard Left anti-American politics,” said Owens, a civil rights movement activist who marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
“They don’t represent most Americans, and they don’t reflect the outlook of most African Americans,” he added. “By caving to Mr. Kaepernick’s negative opinions of America, the Founding Fathers, and the woman who designed the first flag, Nike has aligned itself with a radical anti-American viewpoint.”
The scuffle began earlier this week when Chakrabarti, in a tweet that has since been deleted, compared moderate Democrats to segregationists. “Instead of ‘fiscally conservative but socially liberal,’ let’s call the New Democrats and Blue Dog Caucus the ‘New Southern Democrats,’” he wrote. “They certainly seem hell bent to do to black and brown people today what the old Southern Democrats did the 40s”... Meanwhile, Ocasio-Cortez has feuded with Pelosi, who dismissed the congresswoman and her allies... Since then, the tit-for-tat has continued, though on Wednesday, Pelosi told her colleagues to stop tweeting their grievances about colleagues, NBC News reported. It appears the advice was ignored by her caucus’ account.

The majority of birds found by rescuers on Tuesday and Wednesday were long-billed corellas, a protected species, and on the brink of death when they landed... “Only two or three were actually deceased. The rest were just screaming on the ground. They couldn’t fly anymore, they were bleeding out of their mouths," Sarah King, the founder of Casper’s Bird Rescue, told The Guardian. King told ABC animal rescuers contacted the local council to determine if they had attempted to harm the birds, but members insisted they had only used herbicides on plants which are not harmful to wildlife.
The government is investigating the deaths and the state's Department for Environment and Water has not been able to confirm the cause of death of the birds but rescuers suspect poisoning.
At the center of Jeffrey Epstein’s secluded New Mexico ranch sits a sprawling residence the financier built decades ago — complete with plans for a 4,000-square-foot (372-square-meter) courtyard, a living room roughly the size of the average American home and a nearby private airplane runway.
Known as the Zorro Ranch, the high-desert property is now tied to an investigation that the state attorney general’s office says it has opened into Epstein with plans to forward findings to federal authorities in New York.
Under the new arrangement, Mueller will testify for an extended period of time — three hours instead of two — before the House Judiciary Committee. He will then testify before the House intelligence committee in a separate hearing. The two committees said in a statement that all members of both committees will be able to question him.
