It's no moon, but the idea is to put into orbit a robotic hub with an optional military crew. So, will we soon witness the power of a fully armed and operational battle station? The Defence Innovation Unit (DIU) is a body tasked with thinking big, thinking bold — and investing in the technology necessary to turn such thoughts into reality... Right now, it is thinking the US needs a dedicated military space station.
It is reportedly calling for industry submissions on the design and construction of a "self-contained and freeflying orbital outpost". It must provide "space assembly, microgravity experimentation, logistics and storage, manufacturing, training, test and evaluation, hosting payloads, and other functions". Breaking Defence reports the director of the DIU's space unit, Colonel Steve Butow, as saying the Pentagon is, at this stage, mainly interested in robotic orbital facilities...
When asked for comment on Thiel’s remarks, Google reiterated that it does not have any dealings with the Chinese military. The company said Thiel’s allegations are false, but did not elaborate on the situation. Google representatives declined further comment...
Thiel said that there are “three questions that should be asked” of Google in relation to its dealings with Beijing.
"Number one, how many foreign intelligence agencies have infiltrated your Manhattan Project for AI?”
"Number two, does Google's senior management consider itself to have been thoroughly infiltrated by Chinese intelligence?
Thiel went on to rip Google for its relationship with the Chinese government.
"Number three, is it because they consider themselves to be so thoroughly infiltrated that they have engaged in the seemingly treasonous decision to work with the Chinese military and not with the US military... because they are making the sort of bad, short-term rationalistic [decision] that if the technology doesn't go out the front door, it gets stolen out the backdoor anyway?"
On Monday, Mr. Mnuchin cited the use of Bitcoin in terrorist financing, tax evasion and human trafficking, though so far law enforcement officials have brought few cases in those areas... “The Treasury Department has expressed very serious concerns that Libra could be misused by money launderers and terrorist financiers,” he said, adding “we will not tolerate the use of the cryptocurrencies in support of illicit activities.”...
Facebook has designed Libra so that it will be run by a Swiss association governed by at least a hundred companies and other partners, rather than just Facebook itself.
It's looking more and more like Bitcoin was the Government's A/B test, and Libra is the bi-product. Do you agree?
Kamala Harris bemoaned the influence of the powerful and connected elite last Tuesday when she called on top Justice Department officials to recuse themselves from any matter related to Jeffrey Epstein... Yet the same day, Harris’ husband headlined a Chicago fundraiser for her presidential campaign that was hosted by six partners of that firm – Kirkland and Ellis, according to an invitation obtained by The Associated Press.
The form is still less than one page – which was what the Trump administration had promised in order to simplify the filing process. The draft is an early version and will be subject to a review and comment period, so the agency said the draft will likely change before it is finalized. Another draft will be issued later this summer.
Rahm Emanuel told me Chakrabarti is “a snot-nosed punk” who has no idea about the battle scars Pelosi bears from the liberal fights she has led.
“What votes did you get?” Emanuel said, rhetorically challenging A.O.C.’s chief of staff. “You should only be so lucky to learn from somebody like Nancy who has shown incredible courage and who has twice returned the Democratic Party to power.
“We fought for years to create the majorities to get a Democratic president elected and re-elected, and they’re going to dither it away. They have not decided what’s more important: Do they want to beat Trump or do they want to clear the moderate and centrists out of the party? You really think weakening the speaker is the right strategy to try to get rid of Donald Trump and everything he stands for?”...
The judge said he needed more time to make a decision during a hearing Monday in New York.
Federal prosecutors maintained the well-connected Epstein, 66, is a flight risk and danger to the community — saying he should remain incarcerated until he is tried on charges that he recruited and abused dozens of underage girls in New York and Florida in the early 2000s.
EU's Galileo global navigation satellite system nears 100 hours of downtime. Galileo, the EU's global navigation satellite system, has been down for four days, since July 11, following a mysterious outage. All Galileo satellites are still non-operational, at the time of writing.
According to a service status page, 24 of the 26 Galileo satellites are listed as "not usable," while the other two are listing a status of "testing," which also means they're not ready for real-world usage.
The European GNSS Agency (GSA), the organization in charge of Galileo, has not published any information in regards to the root of the outage, which began four days ago, on Thursday, July 11...
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday condemned President Trump for telling a group of female minority lawmakers to go back to the "crime infested places" they came from, saying that that is not how things are done in Canada.
"I think Canadians and indeed people around the world know exactly what I think about those particular comments," Trudeau said during a joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. "That is not how we do things in Canada. A Canadian is a Canadian is a Canadian. The diversity of our country is actually one of our greatest strengths and a source of tremendous resilience and pride for Canadians and we will to continue to defend that."...
... a precarious sign for their ability to survive a lengthy primary fight... The top raisers so far, based on self-reported figures, posted more than $10 million each in the second quarter: South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg ($24.8 million); former vice president Joe Biden ($21.5 million); Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts ($19.1 million); Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont (about $18 million); Sen. Kamala D. Harris of California (nearly $12 million)...
George Stephanopoulos issued a statement saying he shouldn’t have had dinner at Jeffrey Epstein’s house AFTER he got out of prison, claiming he didn’t know about his conviction. Everyone knew. It was major news all year. A newsman didn’t know. What a ridiculous lie.
Anyone remember the documentary on Bill's campaign where Stephanopoulos is on camera threatening a reporter that he'd never work in DC again if he reported on Bill's infidelities? Pepe's farms remembers. It was called The War Room. Watch the video above.
A surprisingly muscular response beyond mere threatening rhetoric out of the European Union over Turkey's violations of Cypriot territorial waters related to offshore drilling operations: the EU has agreed to bring financial and political sanctions against Turkey after repeat warnings of the past weeks...
"We [the] are fully behind Cyprus," Schallenberg added while addressing the crisis, which has involved Turkey laying claim to a waters extending a whopping 200 miles from EU member Cyrprus' coast, brazenly asserting ownership over a swathe of the Mediterranean that even cuts into Greece's exclusive economic zone...
The AFP reports the following after the EU ministers' meeting and announcement of impending sanctions:
The details are not due to be published until 10:00 pm (2000 GMT), but the most serious measure is understood to be a cut of 145.8 million euros ($164 million) in the European funds allocated to Turkey for 2020.
The European Investment Bank has been asked to revisit the conditions set out for providing financial support to Ankara, according to several European sources.
The EU is also expected to downgrade its dialogue with Turkey, without cutting it off completely.
The rule, which only applies to prospective claims and will be finalized Tuesday, would effectively torpedo the current flood of asylum seekers, which consists mainly of Central American migrants who cross through multiple countries before reaching the U.S.
Attorney General Bill Barr released the following statement regarding the rule:
“The United States is a generous country but is being completely overwhelmed by the burdens associated with apprehending and processing hundreds of thousands of aliens along the southern border. This Rule will decrease forum shopping by economic migrants and those who seek to exploit our asylum system to obtain entry to the United States—while ensuring that no one is removed from the United States who is more likely than not to be tortured or persecuted on account of a protected ground.”
